iOS 5 And The Weather App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

"Apple's new iOS 5 Weather app now delivers the local weather for your current location by default. Therefore you'll always have a "here you are" weather report each time you open the app."

I am always on the lookout for good apps, but I usually end up going back to the apps that Apple includes on the iPhone, and the weather app is no different. I have found that I just need some simple information and it usually is provided by what Apple offers. But it is nice they are giving the weather app a few updates, such as location based weather. How about you, do you use the iOS weather app now or have you found some other wonderful weather app to use?

Snow Reports From Your iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:05 AM

"Want to check mountain conditions right from your iPhone? The appropriately titled Snow and Ski Report app by REI offers an easy way to check on snow conditions and ski resorts from anywhere, and it's free."

REI's app isn't the only app in the iTunes App Store that is free and will provide you with information for your favorite resort. North Face has one, and there is also the Ski and Snow Report app also gives you the option to look at the resort cameras if they are available. An app called iTrailMap will download the ski resort run maps to your iPhone so you don't have to have cellular or Wi-Fi service to use it. Handy.

"Living in Texas has many advantages - no state income tax, low cost of living and an abundance of culture. The disadvantage though are the Spring and sometimes Fall thunderstorms."

And with this app it sounds like he won't be caught unaware of the upcoming weather problems. If you are looking for a new weather app, check out the thorough review of this app called Weather Radar, available now in the iTunes store for $0.99 USD.

Into Weather? App Store Has You Covered

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 02:00 PM

http://theappleblog.com/2009/04/17/...e-weather-apps/

"In my line of work, I do quite a bit both indoors and outdoors. As such, it is crucial for me to know the weather forecast at the drop of a hat. The weather app built into the iPhone is a simple, no fluff, no garbage, weather app. It does its job well, but any weather app can give you the highs and lows for the day. Oftentimes I find myself needing to know the humidity, wind speeds, or sunrise/sunset times and other nonsensical information."

This is a pretty good roundup on what is available in the App Store if you are interested in the weather, and really, who isn't? 10 apps that the author goes over , about 1/2 of them are free apps. The Weather Channel is mentioned under the free app section, and that has been my weather app since it was introduced. Does everything I need it to, but it would almost be worth it to have it paid app to get rid of the banner ad. Like the author, I agree that the size of the banner ad sometimes is a bit too large. But I digress, if you are interested in some of the weather apps available, the article gives a nice rundown of 10 of the apps.

App Find of the Weekend: Radarscope

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.basevelocity.com/RadarScope/

"RadarScope is a specialized display utility for weather enthusiasts that allows you to browse NOAA's public NEXRAD Level 3 data feed. It can display the latest reflectivity and velocity data from any NEXRAD radar site in the lower 48 United States. These aren't smoothed PNG or GIF images, this is real Level III radar data rendered in its original radial format for a high level of detail. Whether you are scanning reflectivity for a mesocyclone's tell-tale hook echo, trying to pinpoint the landfall of a hurricane's eye wall, or looking for small features like velocity couplets in the radial velocity product, only RadarScope gives you the power to view radial NEXRAD weather radar on your iPhone or iPod."

Above: The left image shows Base Velocity (windspeed) and the right shows Base Reflectivity (precipitation).

I have to admit that Stormchasers has turned me into a bit of a wannabe meteorologist, so when I found this app over the weekend I grabbed it immediately. If you're into radar reading and detailed info, this is your app. It'll find you based on your GPS position and will let you choose the radar whose data you'd like to view. It's $9.99 in the App Store, and despite the few negative reviews from people who don't understand what the app actually does, it's quite cool and is one of those great little apps you can use to impress your friends when you demo your iPhone.
