Verizon iPhone Tonight at Midnight Pacific Time

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

"Verizon Wireless says it's ready for a rush of buyers in the next two weeks for Apple Inc.'s iPhone."

At 3am Eastern time we will see how ready they are as that is when they begin taking the orders from current customers. On February 10th they open it up to everyone so it will be interesting to see how the lines stack up to other similar events. Some analysts aren't so sure they can handle the demand, commenting that the Razr introduction in 2006 was enough to overload Verizon, and the iPhone launch is going to dwarf it. I'd have to agree, and I expect big lines, as well as technical problems. They always think they are ready until it hits them, just ask AT&T.

Update: More info from this Mashable article: "Apple has officially confirmed that Verizon customers will be able to pre-order the iPhone 4 online starting Thursday, February 3. The pre-orders, which will come on a first come, first served basis, will be available through the Apple Store and at On Wednesday, February 9, qualified customers will be able to order an iPhone 4 on Verizon through the Apple Store for delivery or reserve it for an in-store pick up the following day. Finally, at 7 a.m. local time on Thursday, February 10, the iPhone 4 will be available to qualified customers at Apple’s retail stores, as well as more than 2,000 Verizon stores throughout the U.S."

Verizon Pre-Orders Start February 3rd at 3am Eastern

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:30 PM

"It appears that at least some existing Verizon customers will be spooning instant coffee directly into our mouths and shoving match embers between our finger webbing next Wednesday night: the Verizon iPhone preorders will begin at 3am EST on February 3rd."

And by pre-orders they mean to existing customers only. You will also have to have your My Verizon account all set up to take advantage of this limited offering, since they are only going to offer it to a certain undetermined number of existing customers for some reason. Seems odd, why not let all of your existing customers pre-order? Are they expecting to have server problems much like what Apple and AT&T have experienced in the past and hope to limit the damage? What are your thoughts?

Verizon Announces Trade-In Program

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 PM

"Not exactly a huge surprise here, but it looks like Verizon will be doing everything it can to pair folks with a new iPhone 4 when it launches on the carrier next month, even if they've just purchased a new phone on Verizon or another carrier."

Yea, this is just one more reason to switch, or at least Verizon is hoping you feel that way. The plan, outlined in a recent investor meeting, will allow you to appraise your device when you want to trade it in on a Verizon iPhone 4. And they will also let existing customers trade in a recently purchased smartphone and get a $200.00 USD gift card, or $75.00 USD gift card if it is a feature phone. Unfortunately it follows similar plans that force you to buy the iPhone 4 and then wait for the debit card, which can take up to several weeks. Those types of plans annoy me, just give me the credit on my iPhone now and forget about mailing me a debit card.

Convenience Charge For Hot Spot From Verizon is $20.00 USD

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 AM

"After finally confirming its rumored $30 per month unlimited iPhone data plan, Verizon Wireless said that it will charge $20 per month for its personal hotspot feature (in addition to its required voice and data plans, that is)."

Don't really know what to call it but a convenience charge since you already would be paying for the data plan. This stuff really rubs me the wrong way. The upside though, is that you can use this with an unlimited data plan for $30.00 USD, at least for the near future since Verizon has already said they plan to switch to tiered pricing at some point. But for now that is one advantage over the AT&T option which has the data limit when you opt for tethering. I suppose you can always go the route of jail breaking one of your old iPhones, in which case this article might help. I think jail breaking may be the way to go for me, or at least it is one option I'm considering. What are your thoughts? Anyone out there familiar with doing this, and if so, is it worth the work?

Verizon Going With Unlimited Data Plans Only

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Well, that didn't last very long at all: looks like Verizon is killing off its $15 150MB data plan for smartphones altogether, instead corralling folks into the $30 unlimited option."

Interesting they are going this route instead of the route that AT&T chose, with tiered plans. Is this another selling point for them? It doesn't appear that is the motivation behind it since they are making it an across the board change for all smartphones, not just the iPhone. What are your thoughts?

A Different Take on AT&T / Verizon Ad

AT&T and Verizon Share an iPhone Ad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Just days after Verizon launched its first iPhone ad, a new TV spot from Apple for the iPhone 4 highlights both Verizon and AT&T with the pitch 'two is better than one.'"

Kind of an interesting ad, showing two iPhones in sync as they navigate through various screens. Clever even though this appears to be recorded off of a TV screen so the quality isn't the greatest.

Verizon Discontinues "New Every Two" But Announces $200 Credit for iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

"Verizon Wireless appears to be preparing for the sudden onslaught of new customers coming to their network for the Verizon iPhone by making it harder and more expensive to upgrade their phones at the end of two years."

Yes, not good news for new customers since current customers would be able to continue the program as they are being "grandfathered" in according to Verizon. Another tidbit of information that came out is what Verizon posted in their FAQ page:

"Current Verizon customers who purchased and activated new smartphones, feature phones or certified pre- owned phones between 11/26/2010, and 01/10/2011, are eligible to receive up to a $200 Visa debit card when they purchase an iPhone 4 at full retail price by 02/28/2011 and return their existing phone. Note: This offer is only available on consumer accounts with five lines or less, who are purchasing iPhone 4 through Verizon Wireless retail stores, telesales, or through"

It is still a bit of cash though, since the iPhone 4 is priced at $649.99 USD for the 16GB version, and $749.99 USD for the 32GB version.

26% of iPhone Users to Abandon AT&T for Verizon?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:30 PM

"Computerworld - More than one-in-four iPhone owners now using AT&T will switch to Verizon, a U.S. consumer survey said today.

According to ChangeWave Research, 26% of iPhone owners said that they will leave AT&T for Verizon. The biggest chunk of those consumers will make the switch in the first three months that Verizon offers the iPhone 4, with the bulk of the remainder dumping AT&T within the next year."

Another prognosis, based on what I personally would not consider to be a statistically valid sample. (More than) 4,000 users sampled out of how many iPhones sold? Anyway, the survey found that poor reception and dropped calls were a major factor in those polled saying that they would switch. Isn't this a common complaint with all carriers and most phones? The concept of churn is real. What do you readers think? Would you switch from an AT&T iPhone to a Verizon iPhone, and why or why not?

Switching? Educate Yourself

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

"Verizon made it official today: it will be getting the iPhone, ending years of AT&T exclusivity in the U.S. With the Verizon iPhone a reality, there is one question that millions of iPhone owners are now asking themselves: should I switch carriers?"

We were just talking about this weren't we? Well in my case a bit different since I'm looking for a different device, so if you currently are on the AT&T network, are you thinking about switching over? If so, you might get some insight with this article, and even if you aren't considering switching, it is still a good article to read to educate yourself about the different networks out there. So speaking of switching, since it's the question everyone wants answered, are you?

Hotspot Option Creates Choices, MiFi or iPhone?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

"Wednesday's anticipated Verizon iPhone launch event offered one surprise: users can share the 3G data connection with five devices, turning the iPhone into a mobile hotspot."

And so the dilemma is to keep the MiFi Mobile Hotspot or go ahead and make the jump to the iPhone 4. I too, am going through the process, trying to determine if I should keep my Verizon MiFi. On one hand, it would be handy to have another iPhone just in case something happened to my current iPhone on AT&T, allowing me to still have communication capabilities, something I cannot do with my MiFi. And I wouldn't have to carry more than one charger like I do now. And the issue about not being able to use voice and data simultaneously would be moot since this isn't going to be a primary phone. What are your thoughts?

So What is a Hotspot?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 12:00 PM

"The appearance of an iPhone on Verizon this week was big news, but dig past it and you quickly found that...well, there wasn't that much else to find. We still don't know, for example, what data plans Verizon will offer for the iPhone, or how much they'll cost."

If you are confused as to your need for a hotspot, or don't even know what one is, this will educate you. Brief rundown of the hotspot issue with the new iOS and how Verizon and AT&T currently handle the capability of creating hotspots (or tethering in the case of AT&T) as well as the current costs.

Money Stopping You From Switching? Try Selling Your iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:14 AM

"'Online reseller Gazelle is offering up to $430 for used iPhone 4s,' Steve Kovach reports for The Business Insider. 'For AT&T customers considering making the switch to the Verizon iPhone, this should help put a dent in the $325 early termination fee,' Kovach reports."

For me, it certainly would as they would pay me $345.00 USD for my iPhone 4. If you want to see what your iPhone 4 will bring you, head on over to Gazelle and they can give you the lowdown.

Welcome to the "Pick on the iPhone" Club Verizon

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:30 AM

"Details may remain sketchy on the special event T-Mobile has scheduled for sometime in the coming weeks but the #4 carrier in the US wasted no time cranking up a new ad that riffs on the old "upstarts are cool - Big Guys are stodgy" meme that Apple has used for years to poke fun at Microsoft."

It appears Verizon is now on the receiving end of the attacks, now that they have, or are about to have, an iPhone in their inventory.

What Is the Verizon iPhone Going to Cost

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

"There's an overwhelming energy going on today as iPhone fans contemplate how and when to switch, either from their iPhone on AT&T or from another carrier and handset, to an iPhone on Verizon. As very briefly mentioned in our 'The Verizon iPhone: Switching Now Might Be A Bad Idea' article, Verizon has yet to murmur any real information dealing with a data plan or related features."

Right now there's been no real data about how much Verizon is going to charge for iPhone data plans. I'm sure they'll be competitive with AT&T, but I don't really see them being much cheaper. They have an advantage in that most people perceive their network to be better (I'm not sure because I haven't been a Verizon customer for years.) Personally, I'm not switching. I've had nothing but good experiences with AT&T this time around. Their customer service has been great, and we love our Microcell. If I were a customer who was having issues, though, I'd still wait until Apple announces the next iPhone. There's no reason to lock yourself in a 2 year contract when the new iPhone might also be available on Verizon in just a few months. It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out. Are you planning on switching? If so, are you doing it ASAP or are you waiting until after the iPhone 5 announcement?

To Buy or to Wait, That is the Question!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 PM

"Now that the Verizon iPhone is here, you may be tempted to rush out and buy one. But there's no good reason to, unless you're extremely impatient or you don't care that much about money. If neither of those descriptors applies to you, then you're better off waiting."

When you consider early termination fees, until that is sorted out I wouldn't upgrade if I had any length of time on my Verizon contract. On top of that, a new iPhone is bound to be announced this June, so why lock into an old iPhone? Well, old by the time June rolls around anyway right? And when you consider some of the other points such as the advancement in technology that is sure to come, you really may be better off waiting. Personally I am not going to be one of the switchers as AT&T hasn't been all that bad for me, but if you are thinking about it, you may want to consider some of these points. What are your thoughts anyway, do you plan on switching? Or if you are a Verizon customer now are you going to make the early adopter plunge or wait until June?

Some Minor Mods to Verizon iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 PM

"Early photos from Engadet's hands-on shows a picture of the Verizon iPhone 4 sitting on top of an AT&T iPhone 4. They look the same until you notice that the mute button and the volume buttons on the Verizon iPhone 4 has been repositioned."

Well now the scramble will be on to get new cases out in a month! From the looks of the comparison above, the buttons have been adjusted down on the Verizon iPhone 4, meaning those old cases may not work. Actually if that is all that has changed I don't think it would take much to modify your current case, that is if you are planning to switch from AT&T. It might look odd after the modification but until the new cases come out, better to have some protection than none at all.

Verizon and the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:12 PM

"Ending years of anticipation, Apple and Verizon announced Tuesday that the iPhone 4 is coming to the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. iPhone 4 will be available on the Verizon Wireless network beginning Thursday, February 10 for a suggested retail price of $199.99 for the 16GB model and $299.99 for the 32GB model with a new two year customer agreement. iPhone 4 will be available at more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores nationwide, online at, at Apple Retail Stores, at the Apple Store (, at Apple Authorized Resellers, and by calling 1-800-2 JOIN IN. "

I don't think it was any big surprise that the iPhone was coming to Verizon, what with all the speculation that really got legs once the announcement of the event today was released. And I wasn't exactly surprised that with this iPHone you won't be able to have simultaneous data and voice capability since that has been discussed as a hindrance all along. However, what really got my attention was the part of the announcement dealing with the mobile WiFi hotspot capability that the Verizon iPhone would provide with iOS 4.2.5. Granted, it will be on Verizon's network so it won't exactly be the fastest WiFi connection (at least where I am at), but what it does is possibly pressure AT&T into possibly allowing the same thing. I'm hoping this little tidbit will get AT&T to rethink how they are providing service to their customers and, in hopes of keeping some of them, provide the same level of service on their network. The talk is that it will be part of the new iOS that Verizon will be using. What are your thoughts?

If you have Verizon and want to know all about how to get yourself an iPhone 4, they have set up an FAQ page with (hopefully) all your answers.

Verizon Event in One Hour

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

"The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Verizon will hold a special event at New York City's Lincoln Center (Frederick P. Rose Hall) on January 11, 2010 - next Tuesday today."

In about one hour, we will know exactly what Verizon is going to announce, although the oddsmakers put this event as a pretty sure thing that it is going to be the Verizon iPhone. There is even talk that Steve Jobs will make an appearance. Well, we shall see at 11:00 am Eastern time so stay tuned!

Verizon iPad Ad Unveiled

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:16 PM,+iPad,+iPod)

"No the title isn't a typo - Verizon has actually aired an iPad commercial called Breakaway. Since Verizon is now carrying the iPad Wi-Fi in a bundle with the Verizon Mi-Fi hotspot device, it makes sense they'd want to promote it. Still, feels weird. Like something is a changing..."

Something changing...wonder what they are referring to? iPhone? Who knows, but lots of speculation continuing on Verizon iPhone, however what we know for sure is that Verizon is selling the iPad, along with several other big name stores. And regarding the ad, I think they did a pretty good job with the details, especially when he bounces as they pull the floor out from underneath him.
