SiriusXM iPhone App Outed

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/s...p-revealed.html

"The first-ever official screenshot of the upcoming Sirius XM iPhone app was revealed today during Sirius XM Radio Inc. CEO Mel Karmazin's PowerPoint presentation at the shareholder summit."

Thanks guys. Can we have it, already?

Seriously, as an XM subscriber, I've been wanting this thing forever already. I'm a big fan of satellite radio and a shareholder in SiriusXM (not in enough quantity to make any kind of difference, that's for sure) and while I don't think this will drive any kind of growth in the service (you'll most likely need to be a subscriber already to use the app), I still think it's a great idea and something I'd make a lot of use of. Because of XM, I haven't listened to the crap that is FM in at least 6 years, and only listened to AM only slightly more frequently than that.

SiriusXM App Still In The Works

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124...7988489865.html

"Garrett Huffman of San Francisco loves the Sirius satellite radio that came with his Volkswagen Jetta so much that he would like to get another one for his waterskiiing boat. But the 31-year-old says he's going to hold off until he can get the new Sirius iPhone application, which Sirius XM Radio Inc. has promised to launch in the next few weeks. Compared to buying and installing a Sirius satellite radio on the motorboat, "that would save me money," says Mr. Huffman, a shipping manager for Chevron Corp. In releasing the new application, which will allow customers to stream satellite radio over their iPhones, Sirius XM appears to be tacitly conceding that the satellite-delivery system that once was cutting edge now has competition far beyond what its founders imagined."

I love satellite radio. I've been an XM subscriber for a really long time and when I was buying my new truck, I made sure it had satellite radio built in (which is something that's really easy to do these days; most new cars do). An official SiriusXM app would be absolutely awesome because, much like the guy in this story, I'm hesitant to activate a second radio. Looking forward to seeing what they release.

(Disclosure: I am a shareholder in SiriusXM, but hold no majority positions of any kind and have no voting power on the board. I bought the stock because I like the product, not the other way around).

StarPlayr Killed Because It Was Unauthorized

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/n...-situation.html

"NiceMac has finally gone public on what happened with its satellite radio iPhone App and its relationship/situation with Sirius XM Radio Inc. In late February, the uSirius StarPlayr app was rejected by Apple, and we now have confirmation on what many had already suspected - that the app was killed by the satellite radio provider. This led to the final demise of the StarPlayr project itself, and NiceMac's decision to drop its satellite radio endeavors. According to a recent post, both NiceMac and Sirius XM Radio had been under a mutual non-disclosure agreement for the past 9 months. During this period, NiceMac had hopes of striking an "entrepreneurial agreement" with the satellite radio provider. But NiceMac also pointed out that they decided to move forward as a 3rd party developer, without Sirius XM's blessing, at the beginning of this year."

Sorry for the long explanation, but it's important. The app was not rejected by Apple because it streams (as some wrongly suggested) nor was it held in release limbo because it was a media player that competed with others on the iPhone, nor was it the victim of some vast conspiracy on Apple's part. It was a simple decision by SiriusXM to build their own app and to shut down a product being made in violation of SiriusXM's terms of service (and very clearly so, as demonstrated in the linked article) and without their cooperation or approval.

Ultimately, it was NiceMac who was responsible for StarPlayr being rejected / refused / whatever you want to call it, not Apple. By the way, I think SiriusXM is being really stupid about this, but that's immaterial; anything that grows the platform is a good thing in the long run. At least they were smart enough to decide to bring their own similar player to market in a few months.

StarPlayr Coming Soon!

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/s...ublic-soon.html

"Orbitcast has received word from multiple sources (one of which is extremely reliable) that the uSirius StarPlayr iPhone app - which will allow you to play Sirius XM Radio on your iPhone - will be going public soon. According to these sources, the uSirius StarPlayr app will be submitted to the Apple Store by Saturday, January 31st. After submitting, Apple simply needs to approve the iPhone app, and it will go public."

This will be a truly great application; I can feel it. I'm so looking forward to it! Anyone else out there a SiriusXM fan and looking forward to it? Maybe you make this move instead of going for an additional unit?
