Add an Extra Sim Card to Your iPhone, But There is a Catch...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:00 AM

"Disappointed that your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S has just one SIM card slot? If you're one the few that answered ‘yes' to that question, then check out the Vooma Peel PG920 - a case for your new iPhone that not only features a backup battery, but also a second SIM card slot."

Well this is cool, but there is a catch, namely that it only works on a jailbroken iPhone. If you want more info, you can head to the Vooma site and register your email for updates. I'm not big on jail breaking, because I will take less capability as long as it is easier for me to use the device. However, they do make it pretty easy now to jailbreak, do any of you have a jailbroken iPhone and if so, how do you like it? This device seems like a pretty good addition if you do.

International Travel and the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/162...l#lsrc.rss_main

"One of the most interesting wrinkles in the iPhone 4S-which I review at length elsewhere-is its status as a "world phone." Unlike previous generations, it supports both CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) and GSM (AT&T, the rest of the world) wireless technology right out of the box. But there are some interesting quirks to this product that may please savvy international travelers."

Basically it means that if you are Sprint or Verizon subscriber, you may have a better International experience than those of us with AT&T, or at least a cheaper one. All you have to do is ask for an "International Unlock" of the SIM slot apparently (with Verizon after 60 days, Sprint already comes this way). This way its a bit cheaper to roam apparently, but you can't use the same phone number. Decisions decisions. Have you used international services with your AT&T phone? How was the experience for you? I'm sure it's not as simple as I'm making it out to be but since I've never done it, I am wondering just how well it works.

abroadband: Data Access for Travellers

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.abroadband.com/

My friend Rafe Blanford pointed out this service, which I hadn't heard of until now. It looks interesting - at current rates, it's about 86 cents USD/CAD per MB, and they support SIMs, microSIMs, and USB sticks. That's not "I'm going to order a TV season on iTunes and download it all" cheap, but if you were careful about not downloading email attachments and were sparing with your Internet access, you could make a $40 investment last a week or two. While you can check your online balance easily, it seems this isn't a true pre-pay solution...the metre keeps running without stopping, so be careful what you decide to download.

Note that this is for data only: this is for your laptop, tablet, or I-only-want-Internet-phone. If you want to use your phone abroad and do voice calls, text, etc. you'll need to get a SIM from a wireless carrier. Anyone know of a service similar to this but for full phone service?

How to Activate an iPhone Without the Original Sim Card

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:30 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/07/...ginal-sim-card/

"iClarified.com has been poking around and discovered this neat trick. For users that have an iPhone 3G, 3GS or 4 but misplaced their original SIM card, there is a solution to activating your device."

If you need to activate an iPhone in iTunes, and you no longer have the original SIM card, you can use a Phonebook SIM card. It looks pretty simple in the video tutorial above. Of course, this will only activate the phone. You still wouldn't have cell service.

Oh Canada, You Get Unlocked iPhones Too

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/06...sable.anywhere/

"When the iPhone 4 and 8GB iPhone 3GS launch in the country in July, Canada will finally get its first unlocked iPhones, an Apple FAQ confirms. Although people can already buy iPhones there from multiple carriers, including Bell, Rogers, Telus and Virgin Mobile, models have so far been limited to ones locked to their original vendors. The unlocked option will be available through Apple's online store."

They will also be usable worldwide with many GSM carriers. All you have to do is put in a micro SIM from the carrier and configure in iTunes. Just like they do in Europe, wonder if we will ever get that flexibility here?

USB Fever Releases Sim Unlock Card

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.usbfever.com/index_eprod...products_id=788

"This Sim Card is the Latest in the Line of Smart Technological Solutions to By Pass Network Restrictions on Mobile Phones So You Can Be FREE To Use Your Choice of Network Simcard with Your Mobile Phone, without getting your phone unlocked. In simpler terms this Simcard enables your existing simcard to work on any locked mobile phone. It is used in parallel to your existing simcard as its only 0.10mm thick, therefore can be inserted along with your existing simcard in any of the mobile phones available throughout the world. It can also be removed easily, without causing any damage to your phone."

Do I know if it works? Nope, but I've heard of similar products in the past that do a similar job. Obviously try it at your own risk, but if you're not happy with the idea of jumping on the AT&T bandwagon but still would like the iPhone 3G, this might be your best bet until a software unlock is developed.
