Time For Apple to Wear the Sandwich Board

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-5...subj=News-Apple

"A U.K. judge ordered Apple to publish a notice on its UK website and in British newspapers informing the public that Samsung did not copy the iPad's design, Bloomberg reported today."

This is equivalent to the kid that steals and has to wear the sandwich board stating as much. Seems pretty silly to me that the judge is doing this. If the judge is so concerned about the image of Samsung, perhaps he should carry around a sign that says "I'm sorry Samsung, you are cool too" since he said their product was not as cool as Apple's. What are your thoughts?

Germany Grants Apple Injunction Against Galaxy Tab

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:17 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"Samsung was dealt a blow on Friday when a court in Germany upheld an injunction blocking the sale of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in the country. Apple had requested the sales ban as part of its patent infringement suit against Samsung over allegations that the company stole the look and feel of the iPad and iPhone for its Android-based mobile devices."

"Informed customers" could tell the Galaxy Tab was designed to look like the iPad according to the court, and why wouldn't they since it is the tablet to have isn't it? I do think it's funny that Samsung said their design was "generic" when it certainly looks like an iPad. The only difference is the camera is on the side rather than the top and there is no home button. Obviously Samsung is going to appeal this but until then, they won't be selling the Galaxy Tab in the European Union and will postpone selling it in Australia until the end of September. I will be curious to see how the US court system handles this same complaint since Apple has filed for an injunction here as well. What are your thoughts on this, good? Bad?

What SSD Do You Have?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/201...The+Apple+Core)

"Several months ago, MacRumors noticed that Apple was using two different suppliers for the Solid State Drives (SSDs) in its MacBook Air models - Samsung and Toshiba. At the time Samsung SSDs benchmarked significantly faster (both in read and write speeds) than the Toshiba SSDs."

I don't think it would matter too much which SSD you have, except for the variation in the speed benchmarks. The disparity isn't just a few MB/s either. Using a 128GB Samsung the test resulted in 246 MB/s write and 264 MB/s read speeds in the 11-inch MBA. However on the 13-inch MBA, using the 128GB Toshiba, they only got 156 MB/s write and 208 MB/s read speeds. Quite a difference. If I were to get one of the slower ones, I'd be tempted to take it back for one with the Samsung in it. You can find out which one you have by going to About Mac -> More Info -> System Report -> and click on the Hardware. Then go to the Serial-ATA section and if the APPLE SSD is followed by SM you have the Samsung. If you have a TS however, you are stuck with the Toshiba. What are your thoughts on the debacle, or is the speed difference really that big of a deal?

LAPTOP's Tech Support Showdown 2011: The Worst and the Best Tech Support

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Articles & Resources" @ 03:31 PM

http://www.laptopmag.com/mobile-lif...wdown-2011.aspx

"Who wouldn't jump at the chance to wait on hold only to barely understand the person on the other end? And why wouldn't you want to conduct a live chat with a tech support rep who asks you a million questions before addressing your issue? Fortunately, not all laptop tech support is bad, and knowing who's good could tip the balance during your next shopping trip."

I'll spoil the surprise for you: Apple is at the top, with Dell and Samsung fairly close behind. The latter two have improved a great deal since the last report, so it looks like someone is paying attention. Do your own experiences with the companies in this report match up with the results? From my perspective, the 22 minute average call time for Dell seems rosy - I'd venture my calls with Dell are always 45 minutes or more...and usually rt 15 minutes of that are my call being transferred from one department to another while someone tries to figure out who can assist me. About 20% of the time, said transfer disconnects my call, which means I have to start over again. I am not fond of Dell tech support, though once I get to the right person, they usually help me with a fair degree of competence.

Apple To Samsung: Copy Cat!!

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android News" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/18/...phone-and-ipad/

"Whoa! In the world of big-time lawsuits, this must be just about the biggest. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has sued Samsung Electronics for copying "the look and feel" of its iPad tablet and iPhone smartphone."

Well, this one could be fun to watch. I really doubt anything will ever really happen other than maybe a bit of licensing cash swapping hands. Besides, when you really get down to it does Apple even have a leg to stand on? Their complaints center around the hardware design and UI of Samsung's Android phones. Bad news for Apple is that Samsung used this design and a similar UI long before they had Android phones and even before the iPhone was released. It will be interesting to watch this one play out.

iPhone Tops BlackBerry in Worldwide Sales (2010 Q3)

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple News" @ 07:00 AM

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/2010102...bileapplerimidc

"Apple has for the first time outpaced Blackberry-maker Research in Motion in global smartphone sales thanks to the success of its iPhone 4, a report said Friday.Industry tracker IDC said Apple sold 14.1 million iPhone units in the third quarter while Canada's Research in Motion shipped 12.4 million Blackberry devices."

Interesting statistic. I am seeing more and more iPhones wherever I travel. However, it seems to me that the BlackBerry still rules in the corporate world. Just get on an airplane and count the numbers of (business-looking) people using BlackBerries, and then count the comparable number of iPhone users. No contest, in this admittedly unscientific poll. But, to put it all into perspective, of 340.5 million phones sold in this time period, Nokia sold 110.4 million, Samsung sold 71.4 million, with LG coming in a distant third at 28.4 million. Apple is fourth. I'm struggling to remember when I last saw an ad for a Nokia phone, but obviously however they're marketing their products is still working. Anyone out there own a Nokia phone?

iPhone 4 Owner Beats Samsung Galaxy S Owner in Texting Contest

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/08/25/ipho...msung-galaxy-s/

"This just in from the "bragging about marginally useful skills" department. This week, Salford, UK-based Melissa Thompson set a "texting speed record" on her Samsung Galaxy S by typing two sentences in 25.94 seconds. The sentences in question were: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human." Note that Melissa used a Swype keyboard on the Galaxy."

That record stood for a couple hours, and then <cue the music> came Brian and his iPhone 4. Who knows if it's official, and I really am not going to lose sleep wondering about it. However, congrats on the record Brian, I'm sure the skill will come in handy someday when you, um... Well, I'm sure that it will come in handy and let's leave it at that.

The updates came out yesterday, one set for Brother Printers found here, and one set for Samsung printers found here. Of course you can also get them via the Software Update feature on OS X.

Storm Brews, Turns to Drizzle

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 10:26 AM

The LG Voyager. The Dare. The Samsung Glyde. The Samsung Instinct. The T-Mobile G1.

They've all come and gone quite quietly, haven't they? For all the marketing hype about the Instinct and Sprint's absolutely gigantic ad campaign, it's gone nowhere. The LG Voyager? Touch may do more on the nation's largest 3G network, but if no one has the phone, they'll never know. The Dare? Never actually seen one in the wild. The Glyde? Almost every gadget site that reviewed it said it had the worst browser they had ever seen on a phone. The G1? Niche for now, and way close to "slapped together with duct tape" to be taken seriously (although honestly, I do expect that to change in the coming months).

And now we can add the BlackBerry Storm to the list. Congratulations tech press; you've invented yet another "iPhone Killer." Read more...
