How Much RAM is Enough For You?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 02:00 AM

"Here's a question that I've been asked a lot lately in one form or another: Do I really need 8GB of RAM?"

I have 4GB of RAM and it seems to be enough for my 11-inch MacBook Air, but I don't do a lot of graphics intensive stuff on it. What are your thoughts on this issue, what is the perfect amount of RAM or should you just get as much as you can afford regardless of need?

How Sturdy is Your Windshield Mount?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Using touchscreens in the car can be such a hassle, because even if you put them in a dash or windshield mount where they're safely in your line of sight, they still wiggle around too much. Or they did."

Not with this mount from RAM though, according to the author. It does look pretty solid, and after doing some research on it, I've found that it also has several attachments available so you can get it to work with a variety of mobile devices. So buy the arm [affiliate link], then you can buy any number of attachments to work with your particular device (they even have setups for bicycling). I've ordered one so I'll report back and let you know just how sturdy it is since I plan on using it in my Jeep, not the smoothest of rides.

27-inch iMac Ram Upgrade Price Drop

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 09:30 AM

"Alongside today's release of refreshed MacBook Pros, Apple also quietly reduced the price of build-to-order upgrades for 4 GB RAM modules in its 27-inch iMacs."

Not only was there a refresh for the MacBooks, but to upgrade RAM in the 27-inch iMacs the price dropped $200.00 USD to $400.00 USD.

New MacBook Pros Can Take 6 Gigs of RAM

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Laptops" @ 02:00 PM

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=3057

"If you own one of the new unibody/Late 2008 MacBook Pros or one released November 2007 or later you can use up to 6GB of RAM – the most on a portable Mac. The new MacBook Pros have two slots and the 2GB model ship with a 1GB SO-DIMM in each. The 6GB upgrade requires replacing the two 1GB modules with one 4GB SO-DIMM (the expensive one) and one 2GB module (~$30)."

Now that I'm using virtualization for work-related stuff a lot more often, this might be a move I make. I can give 2 GB to the virtual machine in Parallels and still have the four that my MBP came with from the factory. Hmmmm...
