I'm Selling These Web Sites, Moving to the USA, and I Got a Job Working for HTC. Any Questions?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Status Updates" @ 08:00 AM

I've been writing and re-writing this post in my head over the past couple of months, and that headline was the best I could come up with. It's not easy to encapsulate one of the most significant changes in my life in a single sentence. Now let's unpack that bombshell I've just dropped...

The HTC Job

I've been working with HTC, the mobile phone and tablet maker, since August 1st of this year. Being a long-time fan of Microsoft's efforts in the mobile space - and largely tying my career to those efforts, for better or worse - I've watched HTC grow from being a nameless, brandless, tiny Taiwanese ODM making Palm-sized PCs/Pocket PCs to the mobile powerhouse they are today. I've always had tremendous admiration for HTC as a company and loved their products, so when someone I knew from Microsoft got a job with HTC in late 2010, I reached out and we started talking. The rest, as they say, is history. I believe HTC is uniquely positioned to do some amazing things in the mobile space over the next few years and I'm excited to be a part of it!

Thoughts Media is currently a vendor for HTC USA, and come October 1st, I'll be a full-time employee. I have an H1B work visa, and after closing the sale of my house this weekend (phew!), I'll be moving in the near future to the Bellevue, Washington area with my wife, our two year old son and our dog, and starting my new career. To add a little extra stress into my life, we're also building a new house and will be in temporary lodging until it's finished. Oh, did I mention this is the first corporate job I've held in 13 years? This is the single biggest career transition I've ever gone through. Read more...

Siri Purchased by Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

"How do you turn $24 million into $200 million? Become a strategic purchase for either Apple or Google, apparently. Word is Apple has paid between $150 to $250 million for the two and a half year old app start up, according to TechCrunch. The San Jose-based company is listed as having only 19 employees with four venture funders."

Siri is an interesting app, but it never worked for me because the tone of my voice is such that it never registers with these types of programs properly. Calling 411 and trying to work through the voice recognition is the same thing. I want a number in Portland and I get referred to Pendleton. Frustrating. But this does open up a lot of speculation as to why Apple decided to buy them. What does this mean for future versions of the iPhone OS or does it mean anything at all? Is this one of the steps they are taking to rid themselves of Google? Only Apple knows at this point but it sure generates a lot of buzz, just like the purchase announcement yesterday of Intrinsity. Intrinsity is a bit easier to understand, for me anyway, since they are rumored to be part of the design team of the new A4 chip. The only thing I know for sure is the venture capitalists hit the jackpot on Siri.

Oooh LaLa

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 07:00 AM

"Apple Inc., the biggest Internet-music seller in the United States, acquired Lala, adding a Web-music service to its iTunes song-downloading business."

Apple didn't disclose details, but did confirm they purchased LaLa, which is a web-based service that lets you listen to music (either album or son) once for free, then requires you to purchase it if you want to hear it again. If you just want to listen online, the cost is $0.10 USD, but if you want the MP3 it is $0.79 USD.

No word on Apple on what they intend to do either, in typical fashion spokesman Steve Dowling said "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not comment on our purpose or plans." What are your thoughts? Covering bases? Good move, bad move?
