Is Developer Access to UDID a Big Deal?

"There are a lot of changes being made by Apple to iOS 5. Each new beta reveals a little more about the changes everyone can expect after iOS 5 is released to the public in a few months. There is one big change that Apple hasn't said a lot about publicly and developers might be surprised by it."

The surprise is that Apple is going to remove access to the UDID or unique device identifier for developers to use. So what it means is that developers will have to come up with their own way to identify unique users. So what are your thoughts, has Apple taken privacy too far or is this a smart move?

Pssssst! Apple Knows Where You Are, and So Do Your Apps!

"Apple updated its privacy policy to underscore that when you use location-based services on your iOS device, Apple will be sharing your location with that service."

Some of the posts I read about this took the angle of "Oh No! Big Brother!" but it isn't as insidious as that. In order to use some of the location based apps, Apple shares your geographic location, thus they changed privacy policy to read:

"To provide location-based services on Apple products, Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device. This location data is collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you and is used by Apple and our partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. For example, we may share geographic location with application providers when you opt in to their location services."

First off you have to opt in, and secondly, it's anonymous. Seems like much ado about nothing. Or have you read something else more sinister? What are your thoughts?
