So Much For Palm's Hacks

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:00 AM

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3642

"Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players."

Good. I hope they do break it. That's what happens when you hack your hardware / software: it may stop working at some point. Cue cries of "unfair competition" in 3... 2... 1...

Palm Pre Ringtone Leaks

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/05/2...one-has-leaked/

"The Palm Pre’s ringtone has leaked. You can listen to it now, perhaps even assign it to your iPhone 3G if you’re feeling adventurous. The ringtone announces the triumphant return of Palm, a warrior come home after years toiling in obscurity, mud and blood on its proud blade. But time has aged the warrior mightily; new men—popular, if flashy—have stepped in to fill the void he left so many years ago. No matter. Ring the bells, gather the children! Palm is here!"

I know this isn't "Palm Pre Thoughts," however, Apple and Palm have always shared a special kinship. When Palm released their first Pilots, they always included Mac capabilities. In fact, before the iPhone, many Apple folks had Treos (for better or worse).

Anyway, I remember when the iPhone's ringtone leaked a few years ago. I immediately put it on my BlackBerry Pearl and pretended it was an iPhone for a few months until it actually came out. I reckon a lot of people will do the same here.

Whaddya think, though? This one? Or Marimba? I personally like Marimba better, but this one definitely has its origins in the default Treo tone.

Your thoughts. In the comments. Please.

Palm to Manipulate Supply to Create Buzz

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?...id=az5nzqH0Mt4M

" Palm Inc. may stockpile fewer than 400,000 Pre models when the touch-screen device goes on sale this year, making the phone scarce to enhance its allure to consumers, analysts said. The Pre will debut with about 375,000 units in stock, according to the median estimate of six analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Apple Inc. sold 1 million iPhones in the three days after the debut of a faster 3G model last July. Half of Apple’s stores in the U.S. had sold out by that time. A sellout may help the Pre generate the buzz needed to win customers away from the iPhone. Palm is counting on the Pre, which has a wireless charger and software that lets users shuffle through applications like a deck of cards, to revive its reputation as a phone pioneer, as well as profit."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has been called manipulative by many people to the point where he's become a caricature of himself in the eyes of his critics, but the one thing he didn't do with the iPhone (at least that we know about) was aritificially restrict the supply to keep the demand high. iPhones were huge on release dates (for both models) and despite shortages in the short term, were back in stock as quickly as they could be. You may not have been able to get one on day one, but within the first week, most early adopters were satisfied.

My point is that if people want your product, you don't have to manufacture buzz. To me, this stinks of Palm realizing they won't have the iPhone-like circus on launch day outside Sprint stores and they're trying to make sure that the demand for it goes beyond those who line up on the first weekend.

Could it work? You never know, but I have a feeling people will see through it when there are no lines, no circus, and no phones are there to be had anyway. That's a risk Palm really shouldn't be taking, in my opinion.

AT&T Distributes Silly Competitive Intelligence

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.precentral.net/att-vs-pr...oh-no-you-didnt

"Want more evidence that the Pre release is imminent? How about AT&T sending a document around their internal network for employees to bone-up on some anti-Pre, pro-iPhone talking points ...and then holding some in-store seminars for employees to make sure they get the message?"

I've been in the wireless business for 12 years now, and I've seen these types of competitive intelligence documents from every single carrier every time the competition is about to release a big new product, so this certainly isn't an AT&T exclusive tactic. That being said, I hate these things with a passion because most of them are so overwrought with stretches, reaches, and silliness, that they're borderline lies.

Anyway, take this for what it's worth, but remember that it isn't from Apple and doesn't mean anything as far as Apple goes (unlike Engadget's ridiculous contention that because AT&T is writing this kind of stuff, it speaks for Apple, also). This is an AT&T thing, and they've done it before. No proxies involved.
