Like Feature for iTunes Enabled for iPad with iOS 4.3

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/55327/ping-u...e+Intelligence)

"In addition to a few big features, yesterday's release of iOS 4.3 brought several nice-to-haves such as password reentry for in-app purchases and the ability to comment on songs or like them directly in iPad's built-in iPod application (no, not "like" as in "Facebook like")."

I don't use this too often since I don't have any iTunes friends (don't be sad for me, I'll activate it soon enough just to test it out and then I can find some Ping friends I'm sure!). But if you use the feature then it is nice you can also access it via your iPad. You have to register with the Ping service and this only works on music purchased via iTunes. Do you use Ping? What are your thoughts?

Share Your Playlist With Ping

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:30 AM

"Ping just got a micron less useless on Friday with the addition of new functionality: the ability to make social playlists and share them with friends."

I still haven't done much with Ping, and to be honest I probably won't until it has Facebook integration. That is where most of my friends are so it is pretty worthless to me without the ability to share on Facebook. I like this feature however. How about you, anyone finding Ping useful?

Ping on the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/11/ipad-ping/

"Good news for all of you Ping addicts (and we know there are many of you), Apple has now made Ping, its social network for music, available on the iPad."

Follow what your friends are listening to, or the artists, and let everyone know what you are enjoying. I don't use it, do any of you?

iTunes Updated to 10.0.1, Improved Ping

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 04:00 AM

"Like many people, I activated Ping when Apple revealed it earlier this month, and then like many people I stopped using it. Where's the, um, social? Why is it saying I like all these Britney Spears remixes? Et cetera."

No Facebook integration yet (are they still working on that or have they given up?) but at least with this update it lets you use Ping with your own iTunes library. Much better integration that I'm sure will be improved upon in the coming months. Have you used Ping? If so, what are your thoughts about it?

Ping Appears to be a Success, So Far...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

"Apple's Ping music social network has been met with all sorts of user opinions; some love it, some hate it, others recognise it has potential if it continues to innovate and evolve."

But it hasn't stopped over one million users from signing up for the service, all in less than 48 hours. I'd say that was a success, but the key is to keep signing up users and then keep them using the service. Only time will tell for that, but so far so good. You can find out more about this new service at Apple.

Ten Things About Ping

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple News" @ 11:30 PM

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...etwork_ping.php

"Ping, Apple's new social network, is the standout feature in iTunes 10, the most recent update to Apple's music management application. Within Ping, you can find and follow your favorite bands and your friends as well as recommend or leave notes about the music you listen to. Ping adds a new layer to iTunes - a social layer focused on discovery, not only of new tracks you'll want to buy (as is the obvious goal), but it also lets you discover news from artists you care about, including concert updates, photos, videos and more."

Apple has done a pretty good job integrating Ping into iTunes, and, for anyone concerned about privacy, the default setting is OFF, so you need to 'opt-in' (Turn On Ping). Setting up your profile allows you to specify up to three genres of music to 'follow,' and you get recommendations on artists that you may (or may not) like. Ping is, so far, very unobtrusive, and, due to the fact that it runs only in iTunes, doesn't need a lot of time for setup or ongoing administration. The sole privacy decision in this first version is setting up either a public (allow people to follow me/with or without approval) or a private (don't allow people to follow me) persona. Using Ping, some of your information like name and photo are exposed to the internet regardless of your privacy setting. Pretty simple, pretty clear. I like what I've seen so far, but, of course, it's only been a few days, and this is just the first iteration of a work-in-progress, so expect more to come.

All You Need to Know About Yesterday's Apple Event

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Events" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/everything...t=Google+Reader

"Too busy to read our liveblog coverage of Apple's September iPod Event? Everything you need to know about Apple's new products is below the fold, including details about the new iPod Shuffle, Nano, iPod Touch, AppleTV, iTunes and iOS update."

Pretty good summary of yesterday's Apple event, in case you weren't following along on any number of the live blogs or the live streaming by Apple. As you may have guessed, I was pretty excited about the Apple TV portion and I think they are on the right track with it. The price point is low enough, I think, that this will become more than just a "hobby" for Apple, and topping it off with the Netflix integration is icing on the cake. Definitely a big step in the right direction. The other high point for me was the update to iTunes with Ping. Seems like a logical way to keep track of your favorite artists and find out information on their next concert. The social aspect of it wasn't that big of a deal for me, but I can see how it might be for others. And of course the fixing of the proximity sensor was a big deal, especially since reports had it that it would not be fixed with this update. How about you? What were your highlights from yesterday's event?
