The New Apple?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 02:00 AM

"I've watched the new iPad event twice now."

Interesting opinion piece on the latest iPad event and what the author thought about the event. But more importantly, it is also a piece about how the participants handled themselves.

Two Takes on the iPad and Verizon MiFi

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

"Yesterday brought news of Verizon offering the iPad for sale in its stores by the end of the month and that they would bundle the iPad with a MiFi (portable WiFi hotspot, using the 3G data network). After posting about the announcement I posted this link to the Atlantic that talked about the pricing of the data plans for the iPad (AT&T 3G equipped iPad versus WiFi iPad with MiFi from Verzion)."

Ben Brooks from Brooks Review goes on to explain his take on using the WiFi only version of the iPad with the Verizon MiFi, versus buying a 3G version. I read this article with interest, as I too couldn't wait for the 3G version and have used my iPad with the MiFi whenever I'm in an area without Wi-Fi service. However I don't find that it is the bothersome combination that Ben relates. But I'm coming at it from a different set of circumstances. I'm not without Wi-Fi service very often, so pulling out the MiFi is an infrequent task for me. I will agree that battery life on the MiFi is problematic, so you do have to be prepared for that in case you are going to be on the Verizon network for any length of time. If my situation was more similar to Ben's, then I might have the same annoyances. Before you make your choice of 3G or no 3G, make sure you review how you are going to be using it otherwise you may end up being aggravated.

Microsoft COO Compares iPhone 4 to Windows Vista

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple News" @ 11:00 AM

"In his keynote speech at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference, company COO Kevin Turner said that Apple's new iPhone, beset by antenna issues, "might be their Vista." Self-deprecation suits you well, Microsoft!"

Kevin Turner from Microsoft has openly compared the iPhone 4 to Windows Vista. Vista has been around since January 30, 2007, and was finally "fixed" in October 22, 2009 by the release of Windows 7. The iPhone 4 was released on June 24, 2010, and the first fixes have arrived less than a month after release. Interesting to hear them finally bashing their own product. How bad does something need to be to get lemon designation? Is the iPhone 4 a lemon?

My Two Cents on iPhone 3.0

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 08:30 AM

For me, it has always been the software that keeps me coming back to the iPhone. I'd been flip phone owner for years prior to the iPhone introduction, but having the functionality that the iPhone promised was enough to get me to at least give it a try. And for me, it has become an integral part of my daily life. I'm beyond the hardware aspect of it now that some seem to focus on, such as the shortcomings of the camera. I think you can agree that over the last couple years, there have been many variations in hardware, some very cool, for cell phones/smartphones yet the iPhone keeps outselling them. I'm thinking if it isn't the hardware must be the software.

I look at the iPhone as my portable computer that happens to let me make phone calls. Granted, that is not how others view it, but for me it is about the software. The functionality that the iPhone provides is like having a mini-laptop in your pocket. From the sales figures I don't think I'm alone. Apple went well beyond their goal of 10 million units sold, and the App Store has been a resounding success with 800 million downloads of the over 25,000 available apps and counting.
