Mozy App is Now Available

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/13/mozy...ses-ios-client/

"There are any number of online file storage and backup options these days -- Amazon's new Cloud Drive, perennial favorite Dropbox and Mozy, which I've been using for simple backups. So it's good to hear that Mozy has now released an iOS client that will allow you to view your files stored on its servers."

There are only a few problems with this free app: It's restricted to the US and Canada, you can't decrypt any backups you have encrypted with your own private key and it only works with MozyHome accounts. According to the story a "pro" version is on the way but no timeline has been announced. You can find out more about it at the iTunes page [link].

Mozy Unveils Their Mobile App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

""If consumer software makers don't know this by now, they must be living in some other world. It's now mandatory to make your application work on devices other than notebook and desktop PCs."

And Mozy has done just that with this app that works on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad so you can access your files right from your app. The app is free and available now. They plan on having an Android app available later this year.

In Other Bombshell News, Mozy Does Away With Unlimited Backup

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:00 AM

http://db.tidbits.com/article/11936...the+Rest+of+Us)

"Decho has announced new pricing for their well-known MozyHome backup service. Previously, MozyHome offered unlimited online storage for backups from a single computer for $4.95 per month."

This didn't generate as much news as the Apple-Sony debacle, and I'm kind of surprised to be honest. Under their new pricing structure [link], the unlimited goes away and now for a single computer with 50GB of storage it will cost you $5.99 USD per month, up about a dollar from what it used to cost. Of course you can stay on your current plan until your subscription runs out, but once that happens you will be offered only the limited plans. I really don't understand the thought process for this, since there are numerous options for unlimited backup and all pretty much do the same thing. If you want to differentiate your product from the others, increasing the cost and lowering the value doesn't seem like the right direction to go does it? The competition is taking note, and not in the way that the airlines usually do, by following the lead of the first company to make a dramatic change in fees, etc. Nope, they are offering discounts for switchers (CrashPlan offering 15% and Backblaze offering 10%) from Mozy to their service. Oh, and you can still get unlimited data backup from them at a lower cost than what Mozy is currently offering for the limited plans. Are you a current Mozy customer? Will you be switching? What are your thoughts?

Online Backup Service Mozy Discontinues Unlimited Backup Plans - My Plan Now Costs 1390% More Money

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 12:37 PM

Up until today, I've been an extremely enthusiastic supporter of Mozy for the past several years. For $93.56 USD, I was signed up for a two year plan that worked wonderfully. That works out to only $3.90 per month, which is affordable for anyone who has a computer and an Internet connection. Even if you were paying the $4.95 monthly fee, it was still cheap. I was such a fan of Mozy I was constantly evangelising their service to friends and family; I've seen the effects of data loss first hand and wouldn't wish that anger and frustration on anyone. For the price of a Starbucks coffee per month, Mozy would protect all of your digital information...until now. Read more...

Mozy Releases 1.4.3 of their Backup for Mac

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...rage_2009-08-17

"Decho Corp. said today the latest Mac release of its MozyHome and MozyPro online backup service fixes a problem it was having associated with saving backups sent to it by Apple Inc.'s Time Machine backup tool, which works with Apple's Time Capsule network-attached storage device."

Apparently they discovered a bug in 1.4.1 of their backup for Mac, which caused the Time Machine software to freeze up when used in conjunction with Time Capsule. This update is supposed to fix that for both Pro and Home versions. If you don't use online backups, you probably should since they are so inexpensive, and if you have less than 2GB, this one is free for home users. For unlimited it is $4.95/month USD which is comparable to other online storage companies, such as Carbonite and BackBlaze. I'm a convert (currently using BackBlaze).
