You Have Been Warned, Move From MobileMe Before Saturday

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/final-notic...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"The time has finally come: you need to make the move from MobileMe to iCloud, as MobileMe officially goes dark on June 30."

Friday is the last day to move stuff, so best get to it if you haven't already. If you are behind the curve on it, this article will give you some tips on how to do it the most efficient way.

Still on MobileMe? Clock is Ticking...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:31 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2012/02/...riendly-warning

"For those remaining MobileMe customers, Apple has a message for you: Upgrade to iCloud or else."

Just a subtle reminder. If you haven't because you aren't sure what to do, visit the FAQ page here. But don't take too long, as they are closing it down on June 30th.

Phishing for Suckers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:32 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"There's a new Phishing scam targeting Apple's MobileMe customers."

Yet another phishing scam, this one attempts to get your MobileMe logon information. This also might be the same as your iTunes logon info, and the request is via an email from a company that says it is an Internet provider and is advising you of a virus problem. As with any email you receive that has a link or asks for your logon credentials: DON'T DO IT! Always go to the site independent of the email and log on if you have questions.

Step by Step to iCloud Success

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 06:41 AM

http://thenextweb.com/apple/2011/10...d-set-up-guide/

"Some of you may have been able to download iOS 5 and the latest Lion update, so we're sure you're wondering how to get started with iCloud, the new backup service in the sky from Apple. If you're still getting errors, just be patient."

I was one of those having problems, but at 5am this morning I was finally able to get it installed on my iPhone. iOS 5 that is, I still had to set up iCloud and this was a handy setup guide provided by Apple. As with anything, make sure you back up all of your Contacts, Calendars and Bookmarks are all backed up and that you have the latest and greatest version of iTunes (10.5). After that follow the steps and let's hope it goes smoother than the iOS 5 install right?

Replace Your iWeb and MobileMe Hosting

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/13/ten-...bileme-hosting/

"Yesterday, we reported on a rumor that Apple's website creation software, iWeb, is about a year away from obsolescence, along with MobileMe's hosting of iWeb sites. An iWeb user allegedly sent Apple CEO Steve Jobs an email asking if he should start looking for another website builder and a new host, and Jobs provided one of his patented terse replies: 'Yep.'"

Yes, all is not lost with the demise of iWeb and MobileMe since you have several options, ten or so at least according to this article.

Renewed MobileMe Yet? Maybe You Should Wait...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/05/30/mobi...ew-it-just-yet/

"If you've already paid the US$99 for Apple's MobileMe service, but your account is due for renewal within the next ten days or so, it might be a good idea to hold off on renewing it for now."

On June 6th the expectation is that Apple will announce some news about MobileMe, possibly making it a free service, so their suggestion to wait a few days has merit. If your renewal date falls close to it, mine however is way off so I've upped for another year over a month ago. I'm not sure if this will happen but there are no shortages of sites that are making the prediction.

MobileMe Now Works With Outlook for Windows

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:39 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/63937/the-ne...ok-for-windows/

"Outlook users on Windows who have problems syncing their calendars with the new MobileMe Calendar web app will want to grab an updated MobileMe Control Panel for Windows, released yesterday."

The update was released yesterday (you can get it here), so version 1.6.6 of the MobileMe Control Panel for Windows will give you compatibility with the new MobileMe calendar, and also fixes the generic bugs and compatibility issues that every other update fixes it seems.

iWork and MobileM Rebate Ends

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:17 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/62404/apple-...ored-refreshes/

"A source within Apple has provided us with an internal memo announcing the end of Apple's long-running rebate programs for both the MobileMe service and Apple's iWork productivity suite of applications."

What does all this mean? Who knows but when stuff like this happens it usually means a change is coming to one or both of these programs. We have seen many stories about what is going to happen with MobileMe, such as iTunes cloud storage with the new data center, but the only thing we know for sure is that a change is coming!

Time to Switch to the New MobileMe Calendar

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple News" @ 06:30 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/23/mobi...users-by-may-5/

"MobileMe users were notified today that all users will be upgraded to the new calendar service on May 5."

With this change to MobileMe's calendar, consistency will be achieved across multiple Apple OS platforms. I switched long ago, and haven't looked back. I like the unified UI. Now, if only iCal could be updated as well! Click here for Apple's MobileMe help.

MobileMe is Now Digital Only, No More Boxes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/24...hauled-version/

"Apple today notified resellers that it has discontinued the retail box version of MobileMe, shifting entirely to digital sales. Existing stocks of boxed MobileMe can continue to be sold while their supplies last."

Well, you can still pick it up in a box as long as supplies last, but once those are gone it will be digital only for the MobileMe service. The box only contained a card with an activation code in it anyway, so it was mainly there for visibility purposes, but it does make one wonder what is going on since now they have discontinued the online sales of the service as well (I just did a search and came up with nothing on the Apple Store). I can't see them discontinuing it, so why make it so difficult to buy unless you are going to be offering it for free? What are your thoughts?

Find Your iPhone, But Not With MobileMe

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/01/05/tekt...e-free-version/

"Just because Apple released a Find My iPhone app and then made it free, doesn't mean there isn't room for a little friendly competition."

You used to be able to undercut MobileMe by using TekTrak and their one-time $4.99 USD price, but now that MobileMe has upped the ante with free service, TekTrak had to jump in to the free pond as well. This week was the launch of their free location service for iPhone 4 or 3GS, so all you have to do is get the free app and sign up on the web site. You also get free uses for every time you refer someone to the service. But even if you only get two free uses of this, if you go over and have to pay the $4.99 for the pro version [affiliate link], it's not going to break the bank.

That is all, you have been warned. Carry on.

How Can Apple Improve MobileMe?

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:30 PM

http://blogs.computerworld.com/1749...n_save_mobileme

"Apple CEO Steve Jobs made the news today with a promise his company will make its online hosted MobileMe service much better next year. Other than improved stability, reliability and consistent performance, just what exactly do we want Apple to give us?"

I'd like to see the ability to manage the data on secondary family accounts. We have 3 unused accounts on our family plan, and it would be nice if we could merge them into the one secondary account that is being used. It would also be cool to have more storage options for the family plan. (Right now, you can only buy extra storage for the main account). What's on your wish list for an improved MobileMe?

MobileMe For Free?

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple Talk" @ 07:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5695263/is-mobil...ally-going-free

"We've been waiting for MobileMe to go free for a while now so we're not holding our breath, but could iOS 4.2 really, finally bring a free MobileMe tier to users? MacRumors has found evidence in AppleAccounts.framework that suggests yes."

I've heard rumors about a free MobileMe service a few times this past year. Looking at the same framework file that MacRumors looked at, you can see the the paid MobileMe service isn't going away, at least anytime soon. I suspect what we're going to see is a free version of MobileMe that allows syncing of calendars and contacts, and possibly the find my iPhone feature, but doesn't provide a .me email address or online storage. Personally, one of the reasons I use MobileMe is that with a paid email service, I don't have to worry about my mail being read by robots to serve me targeted ads. I'd hate to have that go away. Do you think Apple is going to be giving MobileMe away for free?

MobileMe Calendar Out of Beta and Available to Everyone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/mobileme-w...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Apple's finally seen fit to make their MobileMe Calendar web app an official product after a long period in beta. It's now available to all comers, and will allow you to check or update your MobileMe calendar from any computer or Apple device, as well as share calendars with friends and colleagues, or send out invitations to events to your droogies."

A welcome update. If you have events in your calendar older than 30 days it takes awhile to update but for current stuff it is pretty quick. Desktop and iOS keep getting closer and closer don't they? You can head over to your MobileMe account [link] and update now.

MobileMe Calendar Web App Will Work With Microsoft Outlook

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:30 AM

http://9to5mac.com/mobileme-calende...ks-with-outlook

"Yesterday, Apple announced on its MobileMe news blog that their upcoming MobileMe calendar web application can work with Microsoft's Outlook. Users will be able to view their MobileMe calendars in Outlook as well as edit them."

I don't use outlook, but I imagine this could be very useful for those that do, especially if you use Outlook at work and iCal at home. Currently, MobileMe Calendar Beta doesn't support push calendar updates or connection through a proxy server. I imagine that since the blog post says "not currently available(italics mine)", that this will eventually change. Is anybody excited about this, or is this a feature you could never imagine using?

MobileMe Calendar Beta and iDisk Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/07/...igned-calendar/

"Too lazy to cancel your $99 MobileMe automatic subscription renewal and make the jump to one of the many free alternatives? Don't worry, your lethargy has paid off this morning as Apple introduces its new MobileMe iDisk 1.2 app and a beta version of its new MobileMe Calendar."

The MobileMe Calendar Beta design follows the calendar design of the iPad, and also adds enhancements such as sharing, event invitations and publishing a calendar to groups. The best upgrade in my opinion is the adoption of the CalDAV standard. If you decide to give MobileMe Calendar beta a try, Apple has set up a page on how to prepare for it [link]. As far as the iDisk update, it is now optimized for the iPad screen, supports iOS 4 multitasking and gives you the option to open your iDisk docs in apps that are compatible with it, such as iBooks.

MobileMe, a Walk Through of the New Features

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/feat...tures_explained

"Last week MobileMe underwent a complete redesign. With only 2-hours notice, members didn't really know what to expect other than the service was just going down for regular maintenance. But when MobileMe came back online, it had a completely redesigned user interface that's fresh and inviting, and a few new features were thrown in as well."

The revamped interface that greets you is pretty nice, but the best part of the update, in my opinion, is the ability to set rules for your mail so you can keep it organized, as well as the ability to now archive your mail. I wish you could add IMAP instead of just POP, but at least they have also given you the option to add other accounts. Overall a pretty good overview of the new features.

MobileMe Changes and Free Find My iPhone/iPad App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 12:30 PM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-2...008164-260.html

"Apple made some changes to its MobileMe service Friday. The MobileMe Mail service that was in beta for a little over a month is now available to all members. Mail at me.com now has widescreen and compact views, mail organization rules, single-click archiving, a formatting toolbar, SSL protection, and better junk mail protection. You can also use MobileMe to read mail from your other e-mail addresses now, according to Apple."

Nice changes to the MobileMe interface, more functional in my opinion, but they also made a change that may not keep me as a MobileMe subscriber.

MobileMe Downtime Tonight

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macdailynews.com/index.p..._today_june_17/

"Apple has issued the following announcement regarding scheduled MobileMe maintenance: Maintenance - 6/17/2010, 22:00 - 6/18/2010, 00:00 PT"

With the following additional info in their notice:

"Due to scheduled maintenance, MobileMe members will be unable to access MobileMe applications at me.com. Access to MobileMe will still be available on desktop applications, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Normal service is expected to be restored at the end of the maintenance window. We apologize for any inconvenience."

That is all.
