Did AT&T Offer You a Free 3G MicroCell?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"AT&T apparently is offering its iPhone customers free 3G Microcell service if they don't move to Verizon."

I wasn't offered one, but then again I live in an area with great 3G coverage now (once they added all the towers). No hidden charges and it was to thank customers for "loyalty" or in other words, not switching to Verizon. Did you get offered this deal?

Wow AT&T, Just Wow

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 05:21 PM

http://www.electronista.com/article....to.microcells/

"AT&T has warned that its recent data caps will still apply when using the 3G MicroCell. Despite its creating a 3G cell site of its own, it's still considered part of the network and counts towards the 200MB or 2GB ceilings, even though the Internet connection handles much more of the traffic. AT&T has justified the lack of free data by noting that the data still goes over its network at other stages."

I thought I was seeing things when I read this the first time, and had to reread closer to see if I was missing something. Nope. AT&T announced that they are going to put any data that is obtained via the MicroCell (data that you already pay for via your Internet provider) towards your monthly cap. I've read responses to this from outrage to no big deal. From my perspective, I use Wi-Fi at home, so if I were to get one I'd fit under the reasoning AT&T is using, which is that it was intended to improve voice calls not provide a primary data stream. But on the surface it's just, well, wow. Amazing. What are your thoughts?

AT&T MicroCell in San Francisco

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2010/04...rancisco-today/

"If AT&T gets a bad wrap for having poor signal quality in any city, it's San Francisco. Part of this is due to the sudden influx of iPhones in the Silicon Valley that began in 2007, putting an almighty strain on the network; of the roughly 800,000 or so people living in San Francisco, we're estimating that around 10 million of them (or 1,150%) are carrying iPhones. Throw in ridiculous topography and monstrous buildings, and it starts to get tough to properly blanket the entire area in radio waves."

It should get a little easier since this past weekend AT&T started selling their 3G MicroCell in the San Francisco area.

AT&T Expands MicroCell Service

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/26/atan...e-more-markets/

"We've previously written about AT&T's MicroCell device and service here at TUAW. It's a tiny cell tower that you plug into your home cable or DSL connection to boost your phone reception. This is particularly handy for those with home offices who may currently be plagued with poor reception on their iPhones."

And now five more markets have been added to their trial list. Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Las Vegas and San Diego residents now can set up their very own MicroCell, but only if they want to spend the additional $19.99 USD per month on top of the existing AT&T bill (besides the $150.00 USD the device costs). The MicroCell covers an area up to 5,000 square feet and is perfect for those with spotty coverage in their homes. Seems like a steep price to pay for this though, should AT&T just fix the coverage issues for their customers?

AT&T MicroCell Launched

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...nthly_fees.html

"Users have reported AT&T's new 3G MicroCell has been test launched in the Charlotte, North Carolina market, with a $150 price tag and no required monthly fees."

They are reporting speeds of 3.2Mbit/sec, which is less than half of the maximum speed (7.2Mbit/sec) supported by the 3GS, but it is in the ballpark for AT&T's "ideal service" according to the article. The device gives you 5,000 square feet of coverage, which is about a 40 foot radius. There were rumors of it costing anywhere from $19.95 USD to $29.95 USD per month on top of the purchase price, but looks like they are just going with a flat fee to purchase, thank you AT&T.
