Tom Tom Set to Update Maps Every Day

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

"TomTom was already a big player in digital mapping, and then it went and signed up to work with Apple on the new iOS maps app."

One of those trickle down benefits from working with Apple is that anyone that has a Tom Tom service will benefit from updated maps, at no charge.

NDrive, Providing GPS City by City

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 09:00 AM

"The crowded iPhone GPS nav market is already starting to resemble a Southern California freeway on a Friday afternoon. But two just-launched GPS apps by Portuguese-based NDrive are different: they cover a much smaller area - they also carry a much lighter price tag."

NDrive has navigation apps that cover larger areas, such as the entire United States, Eastern Europe, etc that cost $32.99USD, but they came out recently with some smaller city oriented GPS apps that are much less. NDrive for Los Angeles and New York City sell for $4.99 USD each. Another GPS option for you to consider, but one caveat is that the price only covers the map licenses for one year, so there may be additional charges once that runs out. But if you live in either area or plan to travel there, it is pretty cheap GPS.

Looking for a Job at Apple?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 01:00 PM

"Apple appears to be making plans to add a dash of Cupertino magic to mapping and is searching for an iPhone Software Engineer to join the iPhone and iPod touch Maps team, MacRumors informs."

From the job listing, "The iPhone and iPod touch Maps team is looking for a proactive and hardworking software engineer to join our team." And further, "As an engineer on the Maps team, your responsibilities will range from implementing low-level client/server code to implementing high-level user interfaces. You'll be responsible for implementing new and innovative features, fixing problems and enhancing the performance of Maps. You will work closely with the other engineers on the Maps team, other iPhone and iPod touch teams as well our partners in other companies." The ad also states they want to take maps to the "next level" so conjecture is that they may be going outside Google in the future, especially since Apple bought a stake in Place Base and the founder is now part of the Geo Team at Apple.
