What's In Your Mac Toolbox?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 04:00 AM

"Working as a Mac consultant brings me in contact with several dozen different Macintosh systems every month. Many needs and tasks are common - OS upgrades, backups, system slowdowns, troubleshooting startup or WiFi problems. Like any good mechanic there are a few items in my toolbox which I favor above others. From built-in tools like Disk Utility, Network Utility and Console to third-party tools like DiskWarrior, FileSalvage and iStumbler, these items help get the job done."

There are many useful tools, some I even use such as CarbonCopy Cloner and DiskWarrior, that are mentioned in this article. As I read the article, it brought to mind a question for me, namely what do you use to keep your Mac running smoothly? Are any of these tools in your toolbox or do you have others that work better? Or do you use different ones to maintain your Mac?

"Here's a quick heads-up. MobileMe will go down for maintenance tonight. Specifically, MobileMe account maintenance will take place on 12/14/2010 between 22:00 and 23:00 PT, while MobileMe sync maintenance will occur on 12/14/2010 between 22:00 PT and 12/15/2010 00:00 PT."

That is all, you have been warned. Carry on.

Troubleshooting Tools to Help Your Mac

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 06:00 AM

"When it comes to troubleshooting the Macintosh, there are many utilities available for getting the job done. Some are cheap and some expensive but for most you will have to shell out a bit of cash for a license. However, there are also some very robust free options out there for troubleshooting software problems to managing hardware issues."

There are ten listed here, all of them freeware, that can help you maintain your Mac. To be honest, I've never used any of the ones on this list. However, if you are looking for some simple tools that have specific uses, this list might be just the thing for you.

With the following additional info in their notice:

"Due to scheduled maintenance, MobileMe members will be unable to access MobileMe applications at me.com. We apologize for any inconvenience."

That is all.

Did Your Computer Make the List?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 12:00 PM

http://cultofmac.com/how-i-got-a-vintage-mac/7966

"Independent Mac repair shops all over the world are rejoicing this week, after Apple's announcement the company will phase out repair support for certain G4 machines, xserve products and other "vintage" and "obsolete" gear."

Products are labeled "vintage" after being discontinued more than 5 and less than 7 years, and "obsolete" more than 7 years after being discontinued. You can check the list over at Apple and see if you have any of these products. Have no fear you PowerBook G4 owners, you can still get parts for them! Oh, you own an Apple StyleWriter too? So sorry.
