iPad, You are Free to Travel the Country

"It's okay to take your iPad to Israel. The Israeli iPad ban is done. After conducting a thorough review of the devices wireless connections, Israel has change its mind. It decided iPads do not "damage Israel's domestic network," as previously believed."

The Communications Ministry lifted the ban after getting more information from Apple, and said they had nothing against Apple, and that they like the iPhone. That's a relief, right?

Don't Take Your iPad to Israel

"Apple's iPad is proving to be popular everywhere - except Israel. The country's Communication Ministry is refusing to let people bring the multimedia tablet into the country because it hasn't tested and approved the Wi-Fi technology used in the device, according to Haaretz."

Israel always has taken security seriously, but it appears one department didn't tell the Communications Ministry about it so they are having to play catch up. So far they have seized 10 iPads, issuing this statement:

"The iPad device sold exclusively today in the United States operates at broadcast power levels [over its WiFi modem] compatible with American standards. As the Israeli regulations in the area of WiFi are similar to European standards, which are different from American standards, which permit broadcasting at lower power, therefore the broadcast levels of the device prevent approving its use in Israel."

No word on when or if this might be lifted. You can read the Haaretz.com story here.

"iPhone will make its official debut in Israel this week when the country's three main carriers will start selling the coveted smartphone 2-1/2 years after its initial launch."

Besides Cellcom, Partner Communications and Bezeq Israel Telecom will be selling the iPhones starting Wednesday night at midnight. Each cell company has committed to purchasing a minimum of 80,000 iPhones each but the analysts expect that number to increase. According to the article, the cell phone penetration rates in Israel is one of the highest in the world at 125%, with about 80,000 citizens in Israel already owning unlocked iPhones according to estimates.
