Ok, Ok... So What About This New Larger iPhone Screen?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 AM

"Apple is testing multiple next-generation iPhones, and we have independently heard that at least one of these devices sports a brand new display."

I think we have all heard the rumors about a bigger iPhone screen, and it really is picking up steam. Now 9to5Mac has released an article about what they say is bound to happen, and Gruber adds his two cents on how this could happen without materially changing the shape of the iPhone. Of course Gizmodo has their own opinion on it. Regardless of what you think, both are interesting reading. What are your thoughts on a larger iPhone screen? Good? Bad?

Just Notes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 06:00 AM

"I am not as crazy about note taking on my Mac as I am on my iPhone. On the iPhone I struggled for a long time to find the perfect notes app, on the Mac though, eh, I mean I need something to take notes but I never really use notes apps on my Mac."

I am always on the lookout for a good note taking app I can use on all my devices, and Simple Note has been the one I've stuck with over the years. I may have to check out Just Notes, though, after reading this review by Ben Brooks. What are your thoughts on note taking apps? Which one do you find yourself using more often than the others?

Find That App!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"You can use the Find My iPhone app to locate a wayward iPhone and Find My Friends to find a family member, but what if you want to find an iOS app on one of the many pages of your iOS device's Home screen?"

I run into this problem daily, so I usually just use the spotlight search function on my iPhone. There are some good tips in this article about locating and organizing your apps. I know I need to!

PowerDock Dual From Griffin

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"Sometimes space is a premium."

If it is for you as well, this PowerDock Dual from Griffin might be for you, as it charges your iPad and iPhone at the same time, and allows space to put keys, change etc all in one place. It's available now from Griffin for $59.99 USD.

Big iPhone Screen or Small iPhone Screen, Do Developers Care?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

"If the rumors pan out and Apple's next-generation iPhone features a larger 4-inch screen, developers say they don't think the change will be a major problem."

I'm not so sure they really care, although it's funny to me they are calling a switch to a larger screen on the next iPhone "pulling an Android." What they mean by that is having to design apps to fit on multiple screen sizes, which is what would happen if Apple moved to larger screen with the iPhone 5, since the 3G/3GS/4/4S all run on the 3.5 inch screen. I think they would be happier if it stayed the same and I don't think Apple needs to move up in screen size, I like the 3.5 inch screen just fine. What are your thoughts about all this talk on a larger screen for the next iPhone?

Manage Pages in Facebook With This iPhone App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

"Facebook has launched its official iPhone app for managing Pages. After a slow rollout throughout other parts of the world, Facebook Pages Manager for iPhone is free and available now in the U.S. App Store."

Looks like now you can download this free app from iTunes so they must have fixed whatever was ailing it. Oh, and it's only available for the iPhone for some reason, but at least now you can manage your pages from your iPhone, something the Facebook app wouldn't let you do.

Four Years of the App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:00 AM

"It's been almost four years since Apple debuted its App Store platform for iOS (and then the Mac), and MacStories has an in-depth look back at that time."

From nothing to an industry that supports over 500,000 jobs and millions of dollars in sales. Impressive growth wouldn't you say? The bigger question is though, what is in store for the next four years? What are your thoughts?

Weather Channel for iPhone Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

"The Weather Channel for iPhone is the most popular alternative to Apple's built-in Weather app and it recently received a complete makeover."

A much improved app now, with a better UI and more features. I use this one instead of the Apple weather app but I'm with the reviewer when he says he would "pay to remove the ads." That really is the only downside to this free app.

Google + App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"Some people just love Google+ and others just hate the company's efforts to create a social network and a social layer across all of its services. Google itself seems to be pretty happy with the results it is getting from Google+ so far - or at least that's what the company is saying publicly."

And now they have an updated app. It's all new and works pretty well for the article. Seems strange they updated the iPhone one and left the Android version alone doesn't it? What are your thoughts on Google +?

Miss Your Alarm Clock? Use This Dock to Get it Back

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"Yet another device that smartphones, like the iPhone, have made obsolete are alarm clocks."

Well get your alarm clock groove back with this snazzy dock for your iPhone. I usually just put my iPhone on the table and leave it at that, but if you need to have a dock for yours, or just want to spruce it up a bit, this is a pretty good way to do it I think. Clean design and you can use it portrait or landscape. But you can't get it until June. If you want to check out some other interesting designs, head over to the Bracketron site where you can also monitor the availability of this $34.95 USD dock.

AT&T Announces Home Security Service Called Digital Life

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"AT&T has announced a new home security and automation service called Digital Life that comes with an iPad and iPhone app with a bunch of security and remote control options."

I like these home automation set ups, makes it easy to monitor things in case you aren't home. And with this one you actually get them to install and monitor. If you are in Dallas or Atlanta, you might want to go to the AT&T site for this since those areas are the first to go live this summer.

Need a Translation App That Works? Try SayHi

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"Talking to someone who doesn't speak English? (Or a language that's other than your native language.)Well, finally, there's an app for that."

It works pretty well if you talk slow per the review. But it is highly rated in the app store and it's on sale now in iTunes for $0.99 USD [affiliate link].

Amtrak Using iPhones to Scan Tickets

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 PM

"Here's a modern twist on a time-honored tradition for train travelers. Since last fall, Amtrak has been training conductors to use an iOS device to scan passenger tickets on some selected routes, including Boston to Portland, Maine, and San Jose to Sacramento, California."

You can either print out your ticket before hand, or just show the ticket barcode on your iPhone screen so they can scan it. Going paperless, I love it.

The Daily Arrives on the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

"The Daily was the very first custom daily news app created for the iPad back in 2011, and now you can get all that great content on your iPhone. The Daily for iPhone is beautiful and extremely easy to use app for Newsstand - no fluff or complicated UI's to distract from reading your news!"

I love The Daily and read it, well, daily. Now it's even better that it's on the iPhone. I can't count the number of times this could have come in handy for me. Well wishes do come true I guess. How about you? Are you a "Daily" reader?

HTC Releases Their Financial Results to the Sound of Crickets

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 02:00 AM

"While the vast majority of the world's tech press was focused on Apple's record-breaking quarter yesterday, HTC quietly announced its own figures."

Quietly so they wouldn't be embarrassed it appears as their results were nowhere near what Apple's were. 70% drop in profits after taking in $151.5 million during Q2, and they blame the iPhone. They used to get 50% of their revenue from the U.S. but admit that with the iPhone in business, there is no chance they will ever achieve that again.

Get Your NFL Skin for Your iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

"When Apple announced they'd picked up Sprint as a carrier for the iPhone, my first though wasn't about data plans or download speeds or this G or that G, it was about the NFL. Finally, after a couple years as an iPhone owner, I'd be able to get a Seattle Seahawks skins for my iPhone 4."

The best thing about getting Sprint on board with the iPhone.

iPhone at Work

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:36 PM

"Apple is pushing the benefits of using an iPhone in business with the launch of a new webpage on its site."

"iPhone at Work" has a pretty extensive list of apps to help you in whatever business needs you may have, some of them of course the standard Apple ones. But there are also some other apps that you might find useful. Worth a look, it's well done as is everything Apple does, in my opinion of course.

Need Help to Shoot Video and Photos One Handed? Try AirClip for iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"You know what needs the AirClip? The iPad needs the AirClip. As it is, the finger-friendly grip is an accessory for the iPhone 4/S, and it actually looks pretty great. The AirClip is a clip-on grip that lets you shoot photos and videos one-handed."

I think I agree, this would be more useful on the iPad. But if you think it's a handy accessory, you can pick one up here for $20.00 USD.

Armor For Your iPhone...Seriously

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"It might add almost five pounds to the weight of your phone, but this armored iPhone case with one-inch of thick steel plating on the back is promised to stop a .50 caliber round."

Ugly, but it does the job of protecting your iPhone from a .50 caliber round. At $650.00 I can't see too many sales of this, cheaper to just get a new iPhone!
