Protect That iPad!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/01/27/tom-...-two-ipad-bags/

"And let the accessorizing begin! Tom Bihn, maker of messenger bags and laptop bags, has already announced two bags that will fit the iPad."

One called the Cache is more like a sleeve, and the other called Ristretto is pictured above. Tom Bihn isn't the only one either, the folks at Magnetism have also jumped into the iPad case field offering a couple choices of their own, but instead of synthetic material they use clothing grade fabric and linings. Not to be outdone Belkin also has a line of iPad covers. I'm sure in the next month or two many more will jump into the fray for accessories for the iPad. But to tell you the truth, the cover that Apple came up with is pretty slick and will be hard to beat.

What Will You do With an iPad?

"Apple speaks of the iPad as an in-between device-a digital media, Internet, and communications tool-that fits somewhere between an iPhone and laptop. And that makes sense. But where does it fit in your life's locations?"

And to end the day, take a look at this article, one persons ideas on how the iPad would fit into their life. For me, after thinking about it a few days, I can see several of the same uses, if not more with some business angles fit into the mix. All except for the use as a GPS as I'm thinking this might be quite large to have hanging off of your windshield, but it certainly would be easier to see while driving! If you are still not sure if you should get an iPad, just riding the fence so to speak like I am, check out this article at Macworld titled "The iPad: What you need to know."

Hands On With Ihnatko

"And now we hit Phase Two of Rumored Apple Ta ... sorry, iPad hype: in which the world attempts to review something that won't ship for at least two more months, and which only a few hundred people have ever actually held and used."

And so begins Andy Ihnatko's review of his experience with the iPad. This is a pretty thorough run through of the iPad, or at least as thorough as it can be for being able to test it for a short 45 minutes.

Amazon Complies With Macmillan Higher Pricing Request

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.tbiresearch.com/amazon-c...+Alley+Insider)

"Amazon has caved to Macmillan's demands that it raise the prices it charges for Kindle books to as much as $15. What does this mean for Amazon?"

Well I think it means they saw the writing on the wall with the iPad looming on the horizon. You may or may not have seen the story, about Amazon.com pulling titles from Macmillan due to a feud over pricing, Macmillan wanting their books priced dynamically, from $5.99USD to $14.99 USD instead of the usual $9.99 USD pricing the Amazon.com Kindle store uses (which they lose money on I'm told). Now Amazon.com has relented and agreed to the request. I think it is like all things, the pricing should reflect what the market will bear. That is the way a free market economy, or as close to a free market economy we can get with all the government intervention, should work. Ultimately the consumer will dictate what prices the books will be sold at, which is the way it should be. What are your thoughts?

Flash or No Flash, That is the Question!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

"Our report from yesterday must have rattled some cages at Media Arts Lab, Apple's advertising agency. As we were told by our source at the secretive organization, Apple came crashing down on them with urgent requests to change the video."

If you are curious, you can head over to YouTube and see the original version, clearly showing the web site fully functioning, Flash included. What the folks at Chiat/Day Media Arts Lab do is mock up fake web sites so they perform as intended while making the commercials. So this little mistake slipped by apparently, but has since been corrected. If you have seen the video of the presentation, Flash clearly isn't working on the iPad and you can hear chuckles from the crowd when it is displayed while Jobs surfs with the iPad. But is it really a surprise to anyone?

iPad a Drain on AT&T?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/146...l?lsrc=rss_main

"Now that AT&T has taken its lumps from competitors and users over the size of its 3G network, the company is determined not to be caught flat footed again."

So the day after iPad, AT&T comes out with information that basically says we won't let you down. They are committing to investing $2 billion USD on improving their wireless network in 2010 adding approximately 2,000 new cell sites to expand coverage. AT&T also expects by the end of 2011 to have 90 percent of their 3G network covered with the transition to HSPA 7.2 technology. Even though this came on the heels of the iPad announcement, I don't think this will be as much a drain on the AT&T network as others are thinking it will be. I'm of the opinion that this will mainly be in the home or used where there is Wi-Fi available for the most part. I could be wrong, but I'm basing it on the fact that the iPad, while portable, isn't like the iPhone that is carried everywhere you go. I see the regular user having it in a place they normally use Wi-Fi like the home, office or dorm. What are your thoughts?

Now That The Dust Has Settled...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 07:00 AM

http://moneywatch.bnet.com/investin...turbulence/428/

"Apple's stock soared after the iPad, a hybrid iPhone and netbook computer, was unveiled Wednesday and then plunged with the rest of the market Thursday morning. That shows the best and worst aspects of investing in Apple, all in less than 24 hours."

Apple stock opened at $206.85 USD on the day of the iPad announcement, fluctuating to a high of $210.58 USD after going as low as $199.53 USD before finally settling in to close at $207.88 USD for the day. But the glow from the event wouldn't last as by Friday, brought down in large part to sell offs in the market as a whole, Apple was down to $192.06 USD as a closing price. Here is hoping today will be a better day!

Well, iPad is Reality

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/node/13498?u...e+Intelligence)

"I spent way too much time playing with the iPad today. In fact, I'm still thinking about it and here's why: The browser is better than the browser on my MacBook. It might be the best browsing experience out there. By a lot."

And so began the review from Seth Weintraub over at 9 to 5 Mac. And here is an even better hands-on review over at Apple Insider. I'm not sure if you watched the keynote or any of a number of streams from the event, but here are my thoughts on it.
