TiVO to Offer Streaming Device for iOS

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"TiVO recently announced a new TV-side device that can stream shows right to your iPhone and iPad."

I suppose it's nice to be able to watch what you want around the house without having to wrestle with other family members for control of the TV, but the big problem I have with these restrictions is that you can't watch your shows while outside of your home. I can do this however with my Dish Network using the Sling Adapter, why can't other companies do something similar? What are your thoughts?

The iPad Provides Many Options for Magazines

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

"With everything tending more and more towards digital consumption, the print world is in trouble."

I have to agree, at least for me personally. I read everything on my iPad now, since what I found hard to find in the early days of the iPad are now readily available on a variety of iPad apps such as Kindle, Newsstand and Zinio. How about you, have you given up on print?

Just Notes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 06:00 AM

"I am not as crazy about note taking on my Mac as I am on my iPhone. On the iPhone I struggled for a long time to find the perfect notes app, on the Mac though, eh, I mean I need something to take notes but I never really use notes apps on my Mac."

I am always on the lookout for a good note taking app I can use on all my devices, and Simple Note has been the one I've stuck with over the years. I may have to check out Just Notes, though, after reading this review by Ben Brooks. What are your thoughts on note taking apps? Which one do you find yourself using more often than the others?

Find That App!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"You can use the Find My iPhone app to locate a wayward iPhone and Find My Friends to find a family member, but what if you want to find an iOS app on one of the many pages of your iOS device's Home screen?"

I run into this problem daily, so I usually just use the spotlight search function on my iPhone. There are some good tips in this article about locating and organizing your apps. I know I need to!

Manage Pages in Facebook With This iPhone App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

"Facebook has launched its official iPhone app for managing Pages. After a slow rollout throughout other parts of the world, Facebook Pages Manager for iPhone is free and available now in the U.S. App Store."

Looks like now you can download this free app from iTunes so they must have fixed whatever was ailing it. Oh, and it's only available for the iPhone for some reason, but at least now you can manage your pages from your iPhone, something the Facebook app wouldn't let you do.

Four Years of the App Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:00 AM

"It's been almost four years since Apple debuted its App Store platform for iOS (and then the Mac), and MacStories has an in-depth look back at that time."

From nothing to an industry that supports over 500,000 jobs and millions of dollars in sales. Impressive growth wouldn't you say? The bigger question is though, what is in store for the next four years? What are your thoughts?

Weather Channel for iPhone Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

"The Weather Channel for iPhone is the most popular alternative to Apple's built-in Weather app and it recently received a complete makeover."

A much improved app now, with a better UI and more features. I use this one instead of the Apple weather app but I'm with the reviewer when he says he would "pay to remove the ads." That really is the only downside to this free app.

Learn About and Purchase Art With Art Circles for iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:19 AM

"I have a friend who is all about art. When she talks about any subject dealing with art she borders on pretentiousness as she slings about the names of different artists (living or dead), the people she's met, her near-fame, and so on."

If you want to be in the know, this free app called Art Circles fits the bill. This app covers all kinds of art so you can be "in the know" about a wide variety of artwork. And not only can you share the art you like via email and Facebook, you can also buy the art you like via the app. The coolest thing is you can actually put the artwork on a photo of the wall you are thinking of using and you can see how it would look.

Google + App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"Some people just love Google+ and others just hate the company's efforts to create a social network and a social layer across all of its services. Google itself seems to be pretty happy with the results it is getting from Google+ so far - or at least that's what the company is saying publicly."

And now they have an updated app. It's all new and works pretty well for the article. Seems strange they updated the iPhone one and left the Android version alone doesn't it? What are your thoughts on Google +?

AT&T Announces Home Security Service Called Digital Life

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"AT&T has announced a new home security and automation service called Digital Life that comes with an iPad and iPhone app with a bunch of security and remote control options."

I like these home automation set ups, makes it easy to monitor things in case you aren't home. And with this one you actually get them to install and monitor. If you are in Dallas or Atlanta, you might want to go to the AT&T site for this since those areas are the first to go live this summer.

Need a Translation App That Works? Try SayHi

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"Talking to someone who doesn't speak English? (Or a language that's other than your native language.)Well, finally, there's an app for that."

It works pretty well if you talk slow per the review. But it is highly rated in the app store and it's on sale now in iTunes for $0.99 USD [affiliate link].

eBay iPad App Actually is Awesome

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

"eBay pushed out version 2.0 of its iPad app a few days ago."

Not exactly known for apps but eBay has really come out with a great one with their latest update. And I have to agree with the reviewer when he asks Facebook if they are listening. I hate the Facebook iPad app. They need to hire the same guys that did the eBay app.

iOS Update 5.1.1 Released

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 PM

"Apple has just released iOS 5.1.1 update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This update fixes a number of bugs, including a particular annoying one affecting the iPad 3 which resulted users losing access to their cellular data connection until they rebooted their tablet."

The biggest fix is for the bug that causes problems on the new iPad when switching between 2G and 3G networks. But the annoying bug that is supposedly fixed is the one I've experienced, namely the one that displayed the "unable to purchase" message when you actually have purchased the item. You can find out more at Apple about this "first ever" iPad 3 update.

NBC Politics Launches iPad App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"NBC Politics launched a new iPad and iPhone app Thursday that lets users keep tabs on the latest news coming out of the 2012 race to the White House."

Like any of these political apps, I tend to be cautious about believing everything in them but I'll add this one to the group I have on my iPad. The coolest thing about this app is the simulator that will come in handy this fall. Besides being universal and free and available now that is.

Spotify on the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

"The race for digital music supremacy got a little more interesting this morning when Spotify, the online music streaming service that has quickly become both an industry standard and a key online innovator, released its long-awaited iPad application, replacing the dinky half-size iPhone app that preceded it."

48 hours to try it before you buy it isn't a bad deal at all. After that, you either have to pony up the $9.99 USD monthly fee to continue to use the iPad version or give them some info about yourself to continue it for another 30 days free. I think that is plenty of time to decide if this fits your needs, and from the sounds of the review they certainly did it right with the iPad version. What are your thoughts on Spotify and their move, according to on exec, to become the "OS of music."

National Parks For The iPhone by National Geographic

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 PM

"If you're planning a trip to a national park or want to learn more about one, National Parks by National Geographic is a gorgeous guide for your iPhone that offers beautiful photography and loads of information, including photo tips, park secrets, must-see attractions, and things to do."

If you are going to one of the national parks in the U.S. then you need this free app. You get one park of your choice with it and additional parks are purchased via in-app purchase for $0.99 to $1.99 USD, depending on the park.

Price Fixing or Not?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:51 AM

"Apple prepares to go to trial to fight the US Department of Justice's claims that the Cupertino company conspired to fix ebook prices with publishers, former publisher of the Wall Street Journal L. Gordon Crovitz has an interesting oped in today's paper which he says that Apple's 30% profit sharing "agency model" with ebook publishers does not amount to the price fixing conspiracy that the DOJ accuses the company of."

Interesting oped from Crovitz. I especially like the quote from Apple's Eddie Cue: 'I don't think you understand. We can't treat newspapers or magazines any differently than we treat FarmVille.' And that is at the heart of this whole investigation it appears. Apple wants to, and does, treat everyone the same. If you want to operate in the Apple model and get your stuff on the iPad, you pay what everyone else does. Makes sense to me, what are your thoughts?

It's called Instarchive, sign into your Instagram account and we'll send your photos down to your computer in a convenient zip file. It's quick and easy, we hope you like it.'"

Personalize Your Wiki Searches With WikiNodes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:30 AM

"Wikipedia gets a new, personal dimension in the latest version of the WikiNodes app for the Apple iPad, which brings Wikipedia to life by immersing readers in an infinite constellation of visual links. Readers can visually browse related nodes, bookmark favorites, annotate with text and multimedia, and share in multiple ways."

WikiNodes [affiliate link] just received a major update that, among other things, allows users to update entries in Wikipedia right from the app. No update yet for the retina display but that is supposed to come later this month to the former "staff pick" at the Apple iTunes Store.
