iPhone Case and Insurance, What a Deal!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/an-iphone-c...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"Being the resident "extreme" iPhone case enthusiast (and also the klutz who drops his phone most often), I was intrigued by the new cellhelmet Kickstarter project."

This is a great idea, and it is made even better because the cases look good. I hate cases that don't have the opening for the Apple logo on the back, it just messes up the aesthetics for me. And since this one is also form fitted and has the extra cushioning on the edges and corners, it looks like it would really do the job. However, we won't know if we can even purchase one of these until March 11th when the Kickstarter project is either funded or cancelled. So if you are like me and think having a case that includes insurance for breaking your iPhone thrown in (you do have to pay what amounts to a $50.00 USD deductible if you do break your iPhone in the case), then perhaps you should head over to the Kickstarter page and put your money down.

AT&T Raises Phone Insurance and Slaps Data Hogs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:30 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...e_5_launch.html

"AT&T plans to raise insurance costs for iPhone users and begin to throttle the top 5 percent of its data users as it prepares for the launch of Apple's fifth-generation handset."

You can go here to see the updated insurance information, but basically they are raising their rates from $5.00 USD to $7.00. And that is for current as well as new users, so no grandfathering here! On top of that will be a $199.00 USD deductible for this new tier they are calling "Device Tier 3." Supposedly this is for iPhones and other smartphones in the lineup. Heavy data users are also being sent text messages from AT&T with a warning of a reduced speed come October 1st if they don't watch it. I never have to worry about that as I'm close to WiFi most of the time, thankfully, but even if I wasn't, I'm not sure I would hit that top 5% of users threshold. How about you, do you ever come close? What are your thoughts?

Finally! AT&T to Offer iPhone Insurance

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:22 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ance_offerings/

"AT&T is adding Apple's iPhone to its mobile insurance program for the first time on July 17. Previously, AT&T's only option for iPhone insurance was through a third-party company."

Direct from the AT&T site, the highlights are as follows:

  • $4.99 Monthly Premium: Per mobile number enrolled and a non-refundable deductible for each approved claimIncidents Covered: Lost, stolen, accidental damage and mechanical or electrical failure after the manufacturer's warranty period has expired
  • Non-Refundable Deductible: $50/$125 per approved claim, depending on the device model
  • Replacement Time: Next business day (in most cases)
  • Claim Limits: Two claims within any consecutive 12 months, with a maximum device value of $1500 per claim
  • Replacement Equipment: Claims may be fulfilled with a new or remanufactured device. Colors, features and accessory compatibility are not guaranteed.
  • Cancellation Policy: Cancel anytime and receive a prorated refund of your unearned premium
  • NOTE: Please keep a copy of your original purchase receipt and/or proof of purchase for your insured device which may be required to process your claim.

Well, it's about time don't you think? But a bigger question is, are you going to take advantage of this new program?

AT&T to Offer iPhone Insurance?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...quaretrade.html

"When the iPhone appeared, AT&T excluded it from its standard phone hardware insurance plan. Now it appears the company is ready to launch a plan specifically for the iPhone, at a rather steep $13.99 per month, significantly higher than third party warranties available from SquareTrade."

Apple Insider offers a pretty good comparison between the AT&T plan that is supposed to be offered and Square Trade, which offers several different types of device plans. Also, under certain circumstances (depends on the size and also you have to sign up for another two year commitment), you can get another iPhone at Apple for $99.00 USD to $199.00 USD if your iPhone breaks. Or if you buy at Best Buy they have a great warranty replacement plan for around $15.00 USD I think. Not sure about you, but it doesn't quite seem worth it to me. If it were lower, such at around $5.00 USD per month I probably would consider it. What are your thoughts on this pricing?

Good News, Now You Can Get iPhone Insurance!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/141...l_mwnws_h_crawl

"Two years after the Apple iPhone's debut, a longtime insurer of electronic gear is finally offering insurance for it."

Long overdue, and glad there is finally a company that will insure for this type of situation. I had insurance on my 1st generation iPhones with State Farm, but as soon as I put in a claim for one, they dumped me. I've only had the standard Apple Care since, and only for that first year. This coverage will take over where the Apple Care leaves off, covering theft or accidental damage. Nice to have if you have to replace one of these and would have had to pay the full price, even with the $100.00 US deductible. This coverage starts at $62.00/year US and is only available in the U.S. You can get global coverage for an extra cost however. More info can be found at the Safeware site.

Can't Find Insurance for Your iPhone 3G S? Best Buy Has Some

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._insurance.html

"Those who want added protection for their new iPhone 3G S units on launch day will have the option of queuing up at Best Buy to purchase both Apple's device as well as a rare accident insurance plan, albeit one which may cost almost as much as the phone itself."

At $15.00 USD per month, in one year you would spend $180.00 USD for this insurance. So unless you are a klutz and have a problem hanging onto your iPhone, it might not pencil out for you. The other problem is that you have to buy your iPhone 3G S at Best Buy in order to qualify for the service. But there aren't many options out there for insurance, at least that I have found. You may be able to get some coverage via our renters or homeowners insurance, so I think I would check that out before I spent any money on this plan.
