Can Your Mac Send and Received HD Calls Via FaceTime?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:19 AM

"Apple has published a list of Macs that support sending and receiving HD calls through its new FaceTime for Mac software, clarifying who can do what."

Bottom line on all of this is that if you don't have one of the new MacBook Pros introduced last week then you cannot send AND receive an HD FaceTime call. Many Macs can receive them, and most can send and receive the normal SD FaceTime calls. Apple has an article with more on this topic here.

UK iTunes gets HD Options

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/12/08...ie-sales-in-uk/

"Several MacRumors readers have written in to report that Apple has begun offering high-definition movies for sale in its UK iTunes Store. A very limited library of titles appears to be available at the moment with, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse appearing to be the highest-profile release available for purchase in HD."

The normally £9.99 SD films are going for £12.99 if you want it in HD, and the normally £6.99 SD films are selling for £7.99 in HD. They used to only offer renting as an option, so it's good they are expanding the options for those in the UK. It sure seems to take a lot longer than it does in the US, and since I'm not all that familiar with licensing I'm just assuming that is the case? What are your thoughts?

HD With Snow Leopard

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:00 PM

"Got a fancy new Mac with some flavor of DisplayPort connector and a shiny new copy of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installed? If you do and you also happen to hook said Mac up to an HDTV via an HDMI adapter, then head on over to System Preferences to check out the latest uncovered Snow Leopard nugget of awesomeness."

Three new resolution options with 720p, 1080i and 1080p that work with DisplayPort to HDMI. This is the only setup they were able to get it to work with. Just one more nice option with the upgrade.

iTunes Now Has HD Movies For Sale

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/03/19/hd-m...-way-in-itunes/

"Got $20US and a hankering for lots and lots of pixels? iTunes has a deal for you: Apple announced earlier today that it is launching HD movie sales and rentals in the iTunes Store, beginning with a small selection of titles (Transporter 3, W. and more) and with a couple of big-ticket films up for pre-order: vamp-rom-teen thriller Twilight drops on 3/21 and James Bond in Quantum of Solace on 3/24. Sales will be $19.99US and rentals will cost $4.99."

Choices are limited so far, but I'm glad it is finally here. Nice to have the option even if the selection isn't that large, especially since I don't have a Blu-Ray player, yet. Of course when I do get a Blu-Ray player, the price isn't going to be too appealing. I can get the Twilight movie in Blue-Ray from Amazon.com for about $4.00 USD more that what iTunes is charging.

Apple TV Back in the Game?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.businessweek.com/technol...9023_256119.htm

"It's time to drop the hobby talk. First-quarter unit sales of Apple TV tripled from a year earlier, in part due to a software update introduced a year ago that lets users rent movies, including some in the ultra-crisp high-definition format. Version 1.0 of Apple TV let users watch programming purchased from iTunes or downloaded off Google's (GOOG) YouTube."

That is quite a jump in sales, and if that doesn't get Apple's attention I'm not sure what will. I love my Apple TV, even with all it's limitations (no Netflix interface for one) and I keep hoping for that news item that tells me something big is going to happen with it. Granted, since it's original inception when it was deemed a failure due to lack of options, it has gotten some upgrades (YouTube, rentals and HD to name a few). I just wish they would take it more serious and really hit a home run with it, is that too much to ask?
