iPads in the Airport

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 AM

"This might be the most exciting thing to happen to airports after charging stations and XpresSpa. Very soon three major North American airports are going to have select terminals decked out with about 2,500 iPads available for anyone's use."

I had a chance to use the ones they have set up at JFK about month ago, and it is a pretty nice set up to provide information to travelers. It also had charging station for your various gadgets.

Apple v. Google

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 11:00 AM

"Since they got together in 2007, the iPhone and Google Maps have seemed like ideal digital bedfellows."

But with the expected release of maps in iOS 6 coming up, it might not be all roses. Interesting article from the Wall Street Journal that combines all we have heard before in one story. Well worth the read, as if rumors are correct, Apple will be dusting it up with Google once iOS 6 hits.

A problem if you are out of warranty. Or, perhaps not. Following the tips in the article it's possible to take care of it yourself. Just make sure you give it a thorough read to make sure it's something you can handle.

AT&T Eases International Data Rates For Travelers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

"Linking to foreign data networks has always been a risky proposition fraught with big financial risks. Tales abound of American users racking up $1,000 phone bills on cruise ships at sea or while vacationing in European countries."

Well now AT&T is going to try and ease those fears by lowering the prices on their international plans. Not by much mind you, since the rates will be 120MB for $30 per month up to 800MB for $120 per month. It sure beats $1,000 though doesn't it?

Cricket to Offer iPhone on June 22nd as Prepaid Unlimited for $55 Per Month

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 PM

"On June 22, Cricket Wireless will become America's first fully prepaid wireless carrier to offer Apple's iPhone, with an "unlimited" $55-per-month plan."

Looks like they will be offering the 16GB iPhone 4S for $500.00 and the 8GB iPhone 4 for $400.00 USD, with both being compatible with their $55.00 USD per month unlimited talk, text and data plan. This makes them the larges of the regional carriers to receive the iPhone.

See How Your iPhone is Made at Foxconn

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

"Ever wonder how your iPhone was put together? One Chinese reporter got an extremely rare behind-the-scenes look at how workers at Foxconn, Apple's manufacturing partner, assemble the phone at its manufacturing plant in Zhengzhou, China."

It's about four minutes long, so if you are interested in seeing what goes on behind the scenes, it's worth the watch.

ESPN Reporter Goes Fully Digital With the iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"ESPN Pit Reporter Dave Burns covers NASCAR's premiere Sprint Cup Series for the network. He's been reporting on racing for many years, and recently abandoned his personal paper-based note system for carefully selected iPad apps."

I always read with interest any story that shows how someone has replaced their note taking methods or laptop usage with the iPad, since that is exactly what I'm trying to do on a daily basis. Interesting story of how the ESPN reporter came up with his own note taking sheets years ago and modified them into use on a iPad, basically the only thing he uses these days. For my note taking though, I prefer Notability. What are your favorite apps for note taking on the iPad?

Ok, Ok... So What About This New Larger iPhone Screen?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 AM

"Apple is testing multiple next-generation iPhones, and we have independently heard that at least one of these devices sports a brand new display."

I think we have all heard the rumors about a bigger iPhone screen, and it really is picking up steam. Now 9to5Mac has released an article about what they say is bound to happen, and Gruber adds his two cents on how this could happen without materially changing the shape of the iPhone. Of course Gizmodo has their own opinion on it. Regardless of what you think, both are interesting reading. What are your thoughts on a larger iPhone screen? Good? Bad?

Big iPhone Screen or Small iPhone Screen, Do Developers Care?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

"If the rumors pan out and Apple's next-generation iPhone features a larger 4-inch screen, developers say they don't think the change will be a major problem."

I'm not so sure they really care, although it's funny to me they are calling a switch to a larger screen on the next iPhone "pulling an Android." What they mean by that is having to design apps to fit on multiple screen sizes, which is what would happen if Apple moved to larger screen with the iPhone 5, since the 3G/3GS/4/4S all run on the 3.5 inch screen. I think they would be happier if it stayed the same and I don't think Apple needs to move up in screen size, I like the 3.5 inch screen just fine. What are your thoughts about all this talk on a larger screen for the next iPhone?

Amtrak Using iPhones to Scan Tickets

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 PM

"Here's a modern twist on a time-honored tradition for train travelers. Since last fall, Amtrak has been training conductors to use an iOS device to scan passenger tickets on some selected routes, including Boston to Portland, Maine, and San Jose to Sacramento, California."

You can either print out your ticket before hand, or just show the ticket barcode on your iPhone screen so they can scan it. Going paperless, I love it.

Get a Deal on Refurbished iPads From Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:29 PM

"Apple today lowered the prices of its refurbed iPads across the board."

Pretty good deals if you haven't upgraded already. And refurbished from Apple is like getting a new one, same warranty and packaging as new. You can find a complete list of the deals over at MacRumors.

iPad For Photo Editing

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"When I'm traveling, my computer is used for three things: reading, sharing photos, and writing, in roughly that order."

Well now he has mixed in the iPad, especially when it comes to photo editing. And from the sounds of the very thorough article, I don't think he is looking back. Worth reading if you want to use your iPad for photo editing, or even if you already do.

HTC Releases Their Financial Results to the Sound of Crickets

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 02:00 AM

"While the vast majority of the world's tech press was focused on Apple's record-breaking quarter yesterday, HTC quietly announced its own figures."

Quietly so they wouldn't be embarrassed it appears as their results were nowhere near what Apple's were. 70% drop in profits after taking in $151.5 million during Q2, and they blame the iPhone. They used to get 50% of their revenue from the U.S. but admit that with the iPhone in business, there is no chance they will ever achieve that again.

Apple Results for Q2 One For Record Books

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:55 AM

"Apple on Tuesday announced its best-ever second fiscal quarter, as the company saw its earnings rise 94 percent to $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per diluted share, on quarterly revenue of $39.19 billion."

When you compare it to year ago numbers of $24.7 billion revenue and profits of $6.0 billion, it is impressive. And a record 2nd quarter results for Apple. Also impressive was the number of iPhones sold, namely 35.1 million of them which is growth of 88 percent from a year ago. iPad? Also up in numbers with 11.8 million sold, a paltry 151% increase over the same period last year. You can listen to the meeting via Apple, and if you are curious what the analysts thing, have a look here.

iPad as Another Tool in System Administrators Toolbox

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

"John Welch over at Ars Technica wrote a wonderful post about using an iPad as a system administrator's tool, noting that Apple's tablet is "an addition, not a replacement" to the many tools that IT pros currently use to complete their daily tasks."

You can read the Ars Technica article here, but why not right? I mean it makes sense to me, since it has great battery life and easy to use, why shouldn't it be another tool in the toolbox? But whatever your opinion, it's still an interesting article about how one person uses it.

This Custom iPad Case is Amazing

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Holy crap. Check out this amazing custom iPad cover Redditor 44 Oz. had made for him by Australian-based leatherworking firm High On Glue, made with premium leather, suede lining, a kangaroo leather spine and embossed with the original Apple logo designed by Ron Wayne back in 1976, featuring Sir Isaac Newton resting under an Apple tree."

I'm with the author, as I don't normally like folio cases either but this one is certainly amazing. Makes me wish I had continued on with my leatherwork practice from 4H. If you want to order one, you can go check it out on this page and get your email in, it might be awhile though.

iPhone at Work

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:36 PM

"Apple is pushing the benefits of using an iPhone in business with the launch of a new webpage on its site."

"iPhone at Work" has a pretty extensive list of apps to help you in whatever business needs you may have, some of them of course the standard Apple ones. But there are also some other apps that you might find useful. Worth a look, it's well done as is everything Apple does, in my opinion of course.

Wish I Had an iPad Controlled Yacht Like This!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

"Looking more like a floating spaceship than a luxury boat, the Adastra is the result of five years of work by billionaire Anto Marden and yacht designer John Shuttleworth."

Beauty and brains here, since its full of high-tech stuff including an iPad powered remote control system that can control a number of features from up to 50 meters distance. The cost to build? Approximately $23.9 million. The Daily Mall has a full story on the ship, or you can go right to the Adastra website.
