160% Increase in use of H.264 Since January

""The increasing criticism of Flash as a vehicle for online video delivery (as well as Apple's dislike of Flash) appears to be driving the adoption of H.264 video," Chris Foresman reports for Ars Technica."

The study was done by MeFeedia, and they found that since January of this year, there was an increase of 160 percent in the video encoded in H.264. They used roughly 30,000 sources including YouTube and Hulu, as well as some of the network sites such as ABC and CBS. For the month of May, 26% of all the video in their index was H.264, compared to 10% in January. They also used Encoding.com to corroborate the data they were seeing.

So Adobe and Apple Can Work Together, Sort Of

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:00 AM

"It appears Adobe found some fire beneath itself as it moves quickly to take advantage of new OS X hardware APIs."

OS X 10.6.3 brought out some options for developers to add hardware accelerated h.264 video playback, and now Adobe is taking advantage of it. They touting what they call "Gala," which is a preview release of Flash Player 10.1. This will allow any Mac running OS X 10.6.3 and that has either NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M processors to playback hardware accelerated h.264 video. Previous to this, the hardware acceleration was only available on Windows machines or x86 based netbooks. You can read the Adobe press release here.

Facebook and HTML5

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:00 AM

"Sorry, Flash, but it looks like yet another Website is petitioning to join Apple's "iPad Ready" clique. On Tuesday, MacStories discovered that Facebook is converting its newest videos into HTML5 for easy iPad/iPhone viewing."

Well, not so fast. According to this story from TechCrunch, they are converting all new videos to h.264, not because they are supporting HTML5, which is the reason the videos play on the iPhone and iPad. They haven't committed to HTML5 yet, only saying they are "considering the move."

SlingPlayer Plans for iPad Version

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.electronista.com/article...r.apple.tablet/

"SlingPlayer marketing manager Dave Eyler today confirmed that his company is working on a version of SlingPlayer for the iPad. The app should be a visible upgrade from the iPhone version as it will carry higher-resolution streaming from a TV-attached Slingbox. Any other changes weren't mentioned, but Eyler told ZNF that the finished version wouldn't be ready for the Saturday iPad launch."

They are also working on an Android version, moving to the H.264 format. According to the article, it will require newer Slingboxes such as the Solo or Pro-HD. They are also working on a Windows Phone 7 version using Silverlight as the wrapper. I'm hoping that Netflix will come up with something in the near future.

Elgato's Analog Video Capture for Mac

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...eo_on_your_mac/

"Elgato announced the release of Elgato Video Capture on Friday, a device that allows users to transfer analog video - including home movies on VHS tape - to a Mac. Videos can then be uploaded to the iPhone or iPod Touch."

This is a much cleaner design than the converter box I use now to convert my analog video, and at $99.95 USD is also much less than what I spent a few years ago. It connects a variety of sources such as DVD players, camcorders, etc via USB 2.0, and includes software to record the video in either H.264 or MPEG-4 formats. More info is available at Elgato.
