Apple to Sell Unlocked GSM Only iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:50 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/160...l#lsrc.rss_main

"Apple Tuesday officially endorsed what hackers have already accomplished: selling an ‘unlocked' version of the iPhone 4. The Apple Store announced Tuesday it is offering a 16GB and 32GB unlocked iPhone 4 - a day earlier than expected."

Rumors were rampant about something happening this Wednesday, and it turns out it was the unlocked GSM only iPhone. The phone won't have a micro-SIM card so you need to supply one from any GSM carrier, and they will sell the 16GB version for $649.00 USD and the 32GB version for $749.00 USD. This will be perfect for those that don't want to be tied to multiyear contracts, or if you travel abroad and use local carriers. It adds one more niche market to the iPhone customer base, so while I'm not interested in something like this, I'm sure there are people that will be dropping the sizable sum to get one of these units. What are your thoughts, any interest in an unlocked iPhone?

TUAW has posted a FAQ on their site that should answer most, if not all, of your questions about unlocked phones.

Comparison Chart of GSM and CDMA iPhones

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

"We missed this when it was posted by Apple last week but here's a good breakdown of the differences between the CDMA and GSM iPhones."

It appears functionality for the CDMA is something that is done with each call, whereas you can set it up for all calls on the GSM, like with Caller ID and having to dial *67 each time to disable call waiting. Something like that would be handy if I had a periodic need to block my number, but if I wanted it blocked all the time GSM is the way to go. Interesting comparison of feature sets.

Current iPhone CDMA Limitations (on Verizon)

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:30 PM

"While many have been waiting a long time for the Verizon iPhone, the same CDMA network that gives Verizon its terrific coverage and reliability brings with it a host of other problems, including the famous lack of simultaneous voice and data and limited international roaming, but also some lesser known issues such as split SMS messages and greatly reduced conference calling options."

The limitations of Verizon's CDMA-based network have been thoroughly discussed in the tech press since their iPhone announcement, with no simultaneous (3G) voice and data, minimal international coverage, split SMS after 160 characters, and limited conference calling options (three users max). That being said, if you don't need or use these features, Verizon still offers arguably superior 3G coverage. Personally I'm tempted just because Verizon's voice coverage is far better where I live, and I generally single-task on my iPhone. My AT&T coverage flip-flops between 3G and EDGE in different parts of the house. As for foreign travel, it's easy enough to buy an inexpensive unlocked phone, and use pay-as-you-go phone service elsewhere.

Switching? Educate Yourself

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

"Verizon made it official today: it will be getting the iPhone, ending years of AT&T exclusivity in the U.S. With the Verizon iPhone a reality, there is one question that millions of iPhone owners are now asking themselves: should I switch carriers?"

We were just talking about this weren't we? Well in my case a bit different since I'm looking for a different device, so if you currently are on the AT&T network, are you thinking about switching over? If so, you might get some insight with this article, and even if you aren't considering switching, it is still a good article to read to educate yourself about the different networks out there. So speaking of switching, since it's the question everyone wants answered, are you?

Oh Canada, You Get Unlocked iPhones Too

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/06...sable.anywhere/

"When the iPhone 4 and 8GB iPhone 3GS launch in the country in July, Canada will finally get its first unlocked iPhones, an Apple FAQ confirms. Although people can already buy iPhones there from multiple carriers, including Bell, Rogers, Telus and Virgin Mobile, models have so far been limited to ones locked to their original vendors. The unlocked option will be available through Apple's online store."

They will also be usable worldwide with many GSM carriers. All you have to do is put in a micro SIM from the carrier and configure in iTunes. Just like they do in Europe, wonder if we will ever get that flexibility here?
