Jepp Charts Approved as Alternative to Paper Charts by FAA

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/13/ipad...nic-flight-bag/

"Jeppesen, the company that produces most of the paper and electronic "Jepp charts" used by pilots for preflight planning and inflight navigation, announced late last week that jet charter operator Executive Jet Management has received authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration to use the Jeppesen Mobile TC App for iPad as an alternative to paper charts."

All you need is one of these to strap your iPad to your knee and you are good to go! I think I would still have the paper ones for a backup, but it's probably helpful they can now use the iPad to flip between the pages. Certainly a lot easier than folding and unfolding a map while you are 20 or 30 thousand feet in the air, or higher depending on the aircraft. The press release has more details on it, or you can go direct to the Jeppesen site to see what they offer, or head to iTunes for the free app [link].

Pick the Right Travel App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

"Travel much? Then you are no doubt familiar with the many flight tracker Apps available on iOS devices. However, despite their relatively simple function, there's a bunch of questions that need to be asked in order to find the right one for you."

A pretty good selection of apps that they go over in this article and it's sure to help you make up your mind on exactly which app you need to fill your needs.

Fly With Your iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 11:00 AM

http://macenstein.com/default/2010/...etty-damn-cool/

"You're likely familiar with the iPhone's 'Airplane Mode', but check out the decidedly cooler 'Helicopter Mode'."

This is expected to be released in Summer of 2010, no word on pricing but I'd sure like one! It connects via Wi-Fi, uses the accelerometer and touchscreen on the iPhone to control it, and so you can see what you are running into, it has a camera that gives you the view on your iPhone or iPod Touch screen. Here is their website, or you can be their fan on Facebook
