Some Lion Features You Might Not Be Aware Of

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/gall...have_overlooked

"It's been more than three weeks since OS X Lion escaped from the Mac App Store and took up residence in Macs around the globe, and for the most part users are quite happy with their new houseguest. Part of the fun with any new operating system releases is uncovering the new features -- and this big cat has plenty of them."

Over 250 features, or so they say, so it helps to have someone else do all the legwork in finding out some of the cool (and I suppose not so cool) features.

A Little Help With the Apple TV Features in 4.3

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 11:30 PM

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ar...f-apple-tv-4.3/

"Today Apple quietly released an update for the second-generation Apple TV, adding support for browsing videos stored on the Vimeo service, as well as purchasing and streaming TV shows via iTunes in the Cloud."

Released yesterday so I don't have mine updated yet, but you can be sure I will after reading this primer on all the new features.

Some Hidden Lion Features That Might Come in Handy

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:48 PM

http://www.businessinsider.com/best...ips-2011-7?op=1

"More than one million people have downloaded the newest version of Mac OS X, 10.7 Lion. Lion touts more than 250 new features, but Apple only advertises a few of them."

The best one I think is the return to normal scrolling from natural. I am not sold on it yet, but I may get used to it. If I can't, it's very easy to revert back to how it was before Lion. Namely, go to System Preferences, Trackpad, then the Scroll And Zoom tab. From here all you do is uncheck "natural scrolling." Pretty simple. What is your favorite new feature?

5 Features to Look Forward to From iOS 5

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/0...or-ipad-owners/

"Apple announced iOS 5, the latest version of the popular iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch operating system at WWDC 2011 this week. While iOS 5 will be coming to a collection of devices, there are a number of new iOS 5 features that extend the functionality of the iPad and iPad 2. While iOS 5 is helping the iPhone catch up to Android, iOS 5 knocks Android tablets running Android 3.1 HoneyComb out of the water."

The split keyboard is fantastic in my opinion, and I'm surprised it wasn't added sooner. Being able to hold the iPad with both hands and type with your thumbs will be of great convenience, for me at least. The other two I like are the wireless Airplay to Apple TV and the WiFi sync. No more cables. Thank you Apple! What are your thoughts on iOS 5 and what are your favorite features?

iOS 5, A Sneak Peek

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/

"Apple's forthcoming (this fall) iOS 5 includes more than 200 new features for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch."

If you are curious what iOS 5 has in store for you, Apple has posted an informational page located here that goes into an overview of the more than 200 new features. I'm always looking for a better "to do" application, and haven't found one that I really like. I always thought that Apple should have made one as part of iOS, and now they have with "reminders." This is a feature I'm really looking forward to, but it isn't the only one. Opening the camera right from the lock screen is going to take away a big annoyance for me as it has always been cumbersome to get that shot when you have to go through several steps just to get it open. And last but not least, the iMessage feature is going to (hopefully) be fantastic. Perhaps now I can drop my unlimited text option. Then again, with a teenage daughter that might not be such a great idea. How about you, what are your favorite features in iOS 5?

I Take My Android Phone For Granted Compared to iOS!

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Android Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://lifehacker.com/5801862/top-1...one-doesnt-have

"We love both Android and iOS, but the open nature of Android just means it can do things others just can't. Here are our favorite Android apps and features that you won't find on its Apple-clad brethren."

Lifehacker has an article up today highlighting 10 things that Android has over iOS, and as an Android enthusiast since early 2009, I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I forgot about most of these. Not forgot in the sense that I don't know they exist - forgot in the sense that I use them all and just assume they should be part of any premium Smartphone experience. While I might only use some of these (advanced automation features, removable storage) once in a blue moon, others (such as widget support, custom launchers and ROMs) are absolutely essential to me. Don't get me wrong, I own an iPhone - but only for the few apps that I don't have an Android equivalent (the iPhone has never been my daily driver). And these days, those apps are few and far between!

So Androiders - what do you find essential on this list? And iOS users - what do you wish your OS had (Or what does your OS have that I should be insanely jealous of?)!
