Google Updates Calendar and G-Mail for iPhone

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/...for-iphone.html

"Today we're introducing a major revision to Gmail for mobile that takes advantage of the latest browser technology available on iPhone and Android devices. We've updated the user interface, made it faster to open messages, allowed for batch actions (like archiving multiple messages at once), and added some basic offline support Despite the advent of 3G networks and wifi, smartphones still lack a high-speed, always-on broadband connection and can have connections far less reliable than their desktop brethren. So, just like when we redesigned the Gmail for mobile client app last October, we've gone back to the drawing board and redesigned Gmail for the mobile browser to overcome some of these limitations. We made performance more consistent, regardless of connection type, and laid the foundation for future improvements."

My mobile life and most of my desktop revolve around Google services included G-Mail and Google Reader. When it comes the iPhone, I've always used the built-in mail client for my G-Mail access, but I've always preferred G-Mail native clients like their mobile Java one for feature phones and smart phones. That being said, the new web version is so good you may be willing to part with your integrated clients altogether. It's fast, looks great, works perfectly, and gives you all the functionality you've come to know and love from G-Mail. They've done some nifty caching stuff to compensate for the general instability of a cellular data connection and it makes a huge difference over previous versions of G-Mail mobile.

It may not be for everyone, but you should give it a look. You might be surprised at how good it actually is.

Kevin Rose Gets Back Pat For Simple Tip

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 01:00 PM

"In the depths of email overload desperation last week, I wished email messages had an 140-character limit like Twitter updates do. In response, two people recommended doing what Kevin Rose does: Set your desktop email signature to “Sent from my mobile phone.” It’s a white lie that makes you look less rude for being short."

This is nothing new for some of us. I've had Smartphones of some kind for most of my existence, and when I got my first BlackBerry and it had that signature "Sent from my T-Mobile BlackBerry," I realized it was brilliant because it's a built-in excuse for abrubptness. In fact, I had a friend at work who chided me for having a similar signature on my iPhone and told me I was showing off. I explained to him the logic behind it and he then added a similar signature to his own phone. Guess he didn't mind showing off, huh?

Seriously? This is a good tip. Don't be so quick to think people are being arrogant or showing off their toys. If you see that "Sent from my ____________" in an e-mail, there's a good chance that explains the curtness of their message. That is unless you're one of Kevin Rose or Gina Trapani's contacts, in which case they may be lying to you to get through their messages quicker!

MobileMe Soon To Have Big File Sharing

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.apple.com/mobileme/

"Coming soon: Email large files. Soon a new feature in iDisk will make it simple to share files too big for email. iDisk will automatically send a message with a simple link. The recipient will just click the link to download the file."

Aside from being a bit pricy, I've always liked MobileMe / .Mac. I only really use it for Back to my Mac and to synchronize contacts with my iPhone but it's still worth it even just for that, at least for me. Being able to e-mail big files will be a nice feature to have, also, if you're into that sort of thing. It's not revolutionary, but if you've bought into the ecosystem, it's handy nonetheless.
