Let The Buyer Compare: App Store vs. One Pass vs. Kindle Store

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 10:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...dle.html&page=3

"Apple's iOS App Store isn't the only game in town for subscribed digital content. Here's a look at how the plans to court publishers' subscription content by Apple, Amazon's Kindle and Google's One Pass compare."

A nice comparison of current content subscription services, with the bottom line here being about subscriber data (as potentially applicable to advertisers). Right now, Amazon has a huge lead in subscription partners, and since the Kindle app works on many platforms, it will probably remain in the lead - for now. Let the best models prevail!

Free Content Via Wi-Fi From Starbucks Starts Today

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 01:00 AM

"Starbucks' free wireless service is a boon to the mobile employed and unemployed, or anyone just looking to kill some time. But starting tomorrow, every store in the nation will also offer sippers a nice buffet of free online content."

The content is called "Starbucks Digital Network" and it was designed by Yahoo. You can access it for free at any Starbucks, and it contains various content including video clips, eBook excerpts and song of the week picks. The best part though, is that you get total access (while you are in the Starbucks of course) of normally paid content such as that offered by Wall Street Journal. If you frequent Starbucks, it's worth checking out, you don't have anything to lose except for some time.

"Our report from yesterday must have rattled some cages at Media Arts Lab, Apple's advertising agency. As we were told by our source at the secretive organization, Apple came crashing down on them with urgent requests to change the video."

If you are curious, you can head over to YouTube and see the original version, clearly showing the web site fully functioning, Flash included. What the folks at Chiat/Day Media Arts Lab do is mock up fake web sites so they perform as intended while making the commercials. So this little mistake slipped by apparently, but has since been corrected. If you have seen the video of the presentation, Flash clearly isn't working on the iPad and you can hear chuckles from the crowd when it is displayed while Jobs surfs with the iPad. But is it really a surprise to anyone?
