Comparison Chart of GSM and CDMA iPhones

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/52244/apple-...deal-with-calls

"We missed this when it was posted by Apple last week but here's a good breakdown of the differences between the CDMA and GSM iPhones."

It appears functionality for the CDMA is something that is done with each call, whereas you can set it up for all calls on the GSM, like with Caller ID and having to dial *67 each time to disable call waiting. Something like that would be handy if I had a periodic need to block my number, but if I wanted it blocked all the time GSM is the way to go. Interesting comparison of feature sets.

Current iPhone CDMA Limitations (on Verizon)

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:30 PM

http://www.tipb.com/2011/02/14/tipb...ne,+iPad,+iPod)

"While many have been waiting a long time for the Verizon iPhone, the same CDMA network that gives Verizon its terrific coverage and reliability brings with it a host of other problems, including the famous lack of simultaneous voice and data and limited international roaming, but also some lesser known issues such as split SMS messages and greatly reduced conference calling options."

The limitations of Verizon's CDMA-based network have been thoroughly discussed in the tech press since their iPhone announcement, with no simultaneous (3G) voice and data, minimal international coverage, split SMS after 160 characters, and limited conference calling options (three users max). That being said, if you don't need or use these features, Verizon still offers arguably superior 3G coverage. Personally I'm tempted just because Verizon's voice coverage is far better where I live, and I generally single-task on my iPhone. My AT&T coverage flip-flops between 3G and EDGE in different parts of the house. As for foreign travel, it's easy enough to buy an inexpensive unlocked phone, and use pay-as-you-go phone service elsewhere.

Switching? Educate Yourself

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

"Verizon made it official today: it will be getting the iPhone, ending years of AT&T exclusivity in the U.S. With the Verizon iPhone a reality, there is one question that millions of iPhone owners are now asking themselves: should I switch carriers?"

We were just talking about this weren't we? Well in my case a bit different since I'm looking for a different device, so if you currently are on the AT&T network, are you thinking about switching over? If so, you might get some insight with this article, and even if you aren't considering switching, it is still a good article to read to educate yourself about the different networks out there. So speaking of switching, since it's the question everyone wants answered, are you?

Some Minor Mods to Verizon iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 PM

"Early photos from Engadet's hands-on shows a picture of the Verizon iPhone 4 sitting on top of an AT&T iPhone 4. They look the same until you notice that the mute button and the volume buttons on the Verizon iPhone 4 has been repositioned."

Well now the scramble will be on to get new cases out in a month! From the looks of the comparison above, the buttons have been adjusted down on the Verizon iPhone 4, meaning those old cases may not work. Actually if that is all that has changed I don't think it would take much to modify your current case, that is if you are planning to switch from AT&T. It might look odd after the modification but until the new cases come out, better to have some protection than none at all.

Verizon and the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:12 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...early_feb_.html

"Ending years of anticipation, Apple and Verizon announced Tuesday that the iPhone 4 is coming to the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. iPhone 4 will be available on the Verizon Wireless network beginning Thursday, February 10 for a suggested retail price of $199.99 for the 16GB model and $299.99 for the 32GB model with a new two year customer agreement. iPhone 4 will be available at more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores nationwide, online at www.verizonwireless.com/iphone, at Apple Retail Stores, at the Apple Store (www.apple.com), at Apple Authorized Resellers, and by calling 1-800-2 JOIN IN. "

I don't think it was any big surprise that the iPhone was coming to Verizon, what with all the speculation that really got legs once the announcement of the event today was released. And I wasn't exactly surprised that with this iPHone you won't be able to have simultaneous data and voice capability since that has been discussed as a hindrance all along. However, what really got my attention was the part of the announcement dealing with the mobile WiFi hotspot capability that the Verizon iPhone would provide with iOS 4.2.5. Granted, it will be on Verizon's network so it won't exactly be the fastest WiFi connection (at least where I am at), but what it does is possibly pressure AT&T into possibly allowing the same thing. I'm hoping this little tidbit will get AT&T to rethink how they are providing service to their customers and, in hopes of keeping some of them, provide the same level of service on their network. The talk is that it will be part of the new iOS that Verizon will be using. What are your thoughts?

If you have Verizon and want to know all about how to get yourself an iPhone 4, they have set up an FAQ page with (hopefully) all your answers.

Verizon Event in One Hour

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

"The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Verizon will hold a special event at New York City's Lincoln Center (Frederick P. Rose Hall) on January 11, 2010 - next Tuesday today."

In about one hour, we will know exactly what Verizon is going to announce, although the oddsmakers put this event as a pretty sure thing that it is going to be the Verizon iPhone. There is even talk that Steve Jobs will make an appearance. Well, we shall see at 11:00 am Eastern time so stay tuned!

Rumor: Apple and Verizon in Talks for CDMA iPhone

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 05:19 AM

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wirele...ne_N.htm?csp=34

"Verizon (VZ) and Apple (AAPL) are discussing the possible development of an iPhone for Verizon, with the goal of introducing it next year, people familiar with the situation say. It would mark the first time Apple has produced a version of the iPhone for a CDMA wireless network, which is different from AT&T's GSM technology."

This rumor has been cropping up a lot lately. I'm wondering if there's any truth to it or if we've just been sucked into the iPhone rumor echo chamber. One thing's for sure; if the iPhone does show up on Verizon at some point, it's pretty much an admission that the repeated attempts at crappy clones from LG, Samsung, HTC, and RIM just aren't having the impact Verizon hoped they would. If they were, there would be no need to seek out the actual iPhone.

Touch does more on America's largest wireless network? Sure it does, when it's attached to the right phone.
