Alternatives to Delicious? There are a Few...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

"The bad news recently arrived that Yahoo, the struggling search/media/something-or-other Internet giant, let go about 700 staff members. The company is also shuttering a handful of products-Delicious, a popular online bookmarking service used widely in Mac and iOS apps, was rumored to be on the "sunset" list, but Yahoo changed its mind. Still, with the future of Delicious in the air, social bookmarkers may feel like Yahoo is leaving your treasure trove of links hanging in the cloud."

This article offers several options, the most notable in my opinion are Xmarks, Evernote and Springpad. At least those are the ones that I use, when I use something other than my own bookmarks folders to keep things that I might want to refer to later. But I rarely use them, instead opting for saving my own bookmarks and syncing to MobileMe. I stick mostly to Safari, using Chrome when I want to watch something on YouTube or anywhere else that Flash is required. I just don't see the end of Delicious as the end of the world, what are your thoughts?

Xmarks Saved by LastPass

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:44 AM

"Today we're excited to announce that Xmarks has been acquired by LastPass, makers of a leading cross-platform password manager. It's a great opportunity that ensures the survival of Xmarks as the same service that you know and love."

Great news for all of you that use Xmarks, and from past stories I know that is quite a few. LastPass is a multi-platform password manager that keeps all of your passwords secure. Xmarks is going to be using what they call a "freemium" business model (just like LastPass uses) according to the Xmarks blog post. Basically the service remains free, but you can add some premium services for $12.00 USD per year, services like smartphone apps. They are also going to offer a bundled service for Xmarks and LastPass, something that seems appealing since it will only cost you $20.00 USD per year.

Can You Help Save Xmarks?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 06:30 AM

"First off, a big thanks to all of you that sent kudos and "Nooooooo's" in response to our shutdown announcement. We take enormous pride in the sync service we worked so hard to create and it means a lot to hear how much our users love what we've built."

I know many of you use Xmarks to coordinate your bookmarks and keep them in sync between browsers, so I'm sure the news of their impending shut down was like a kick in the gut. However, now it appears there may be hope! Head on over to the blog for Xmarks and see what they are up to, and go to the pledge page to let them know about how much you would be willing to spend if Xmarks went to a subscription based service. They are only taking pledges right now to gain some insight into how viable it all might be so there is no risk, but there could be reward for those of you that use the service.

Get Your Cookies Into Safari

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

"Web browser aficionados welcomed last week's release of Camino 2.0, a Mac-only browser based on the Firefox codebase. While missing the extensibility of Firefox, Camino is a much more Mac-like browser that some people prefer to Apple's own Safari."

They have Bookit to keep your bookmarks in sync between Safari and Camino (or just use Camino to import them), and now you can transfer those cookies using Cookie Thief. Camino 2.0 requires at least version 1.1 of Cookie Thief to work and it is a freeware program. If you are migrating from Safari, Camino has set up a web page to address just that task.I haven't tried it yet, I'm pretty happy with Safari and the iPhone integration so not sure I will but my curiosity may get the best of me.

Foxmarks for Safari

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...s-to-safari.ars

"The free Foxmarks bookmark backup and synchronization service is now available for Safari. It allows users to maintain a single set of bookmarks on multiple computers, which is good news for anyone who juggles multiple devices."

I already sync my bookmarks between computers using MobileMe, but I have to use one of those computers to get access to the bookmarks. This is handy since I can be on ANY computer and get access to my bookmarks since they are synced between your computers AND saved on the Foxmarks website. Free is a very good price, especially when they add convenience.
