Best Buy Deals on iTunes Gift Cards

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:03 AM

http://www.edibleapple.com/2011/12/...+(Edible+Apple)

"It's not quite as good as the deal Walmart recently had, but bargain shoppers might be glad to now that Best Buy is currently running a 15% off sale across their entire line of iTunes gift cards."

Not bad if you need some credit on your iTunes account, 15% is nothing to sneeze at right? If you go for the $100.00 USD gift card you will only be out of pocket $85.00 USD. Check the deal out at Best Buy but don't delay, no idea when this deal will be over.

Best Buy Giving Away 3GS Today, Sort Of...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:00 PM

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile...y-on-august-22/

"For someone that doesn't want to jump on the latest iPhone later this year, they will be able to pick up some great deals on older models as large retailers clear out stock of older models."

And one of those deals is today, as Best Buy is "selling" the iPhone 3GS for $0.00 dollars as long as you commit to a two year contract with AT&T. You can see the leaked ad here, but it appears the sale will be starting tomorrow for the normally $49.99 priced iPhone. With an iPhone 5 imminent, I can see why they want to clear these phones out of inventory. The demand is still there, since Apple is still building the 3GS. Personally, this close I think I would wait, but that is just me.

Me too! Best Buy Unveils Music Cloud

Posted by Michael Knutson in "The Competition" @ 10:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/2011/06/22/smell...r-in-the-cloud/

"Come on, you knew this day would come now that Amazon, Google and Apple have legitimized music lockers in the cloud. Yes, Best Buy is jumping on the bandwagon with a cloud service of their own, dubbed Music Cloud and powered by Catch Media Inc’s Play Anywhere platform. Should you care? It depends, as Music Cloud seems to be a mixed bag of best ideas taken from others, clearly with some limitations stemming from their lack of Apple’s stranglehold of the music industry."

Nice to have competition, but are we getting to the point where the consumer may simply get confused? Coming in two flavors, a free Lite version, and a premium version that is expected to cost $4 per month (but with details unknown), we have another alternative. With Android, Blackberry and iOS versions (powered by Play Anywhere) also expected, now we wait for details on availability.

Best Buy Also Offering Back to School Promo to Match Apple's

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/19...tore-gift-card/

"Readers who are disappointed with Apple's new Back to School promotion may be interested to hear that electronics retailer Best Buy is offering to match Apple's promotion with their own."

You won't get this one automatically, it's an unadvertised special deal so you will have to ask for it. You might even get the educational discount on the merchandise if you ask for that too...as they say nothing ventured, nothing gained!

The Head to Head Battle: iPad 2 vs. Motorola XOOM

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Motorola XOOM" @ 07:30 AM

This is a head to head comparison video between the Android 3.0 Honeycomb-based Motorola XOOM and the iOS 4-based Apple iPad 2. Each tablet has pros and cons, and I discuss my findings after using both of them for a while. Chime in with your own thoughts!

$50 iTunes Gift Card for $40

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/43313/apple-...e+Intelligence)

"Best Buy offers the Apple iTunes $50 holiday Gift Card for $40 with free shipping. That's $10 off and tied with Best Buy's Black Friday deal for one of the best deals we've seen on iTunes gift cards this year. Ships in time for Christmas."

Not a bad deal if you need a last minute stocking stuffer. It appears from the product page at Best Buy though, you can only do in-store pickup, thus no wonder it will be available for Christmas! Still it is worth it if you have a Best Buy in your area and the online ordering allows you to choose your store.

Free Mobile Hotspot With Best Buy iPad Purchase

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:08 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/12/20/ipad...ot-at-best-buy/

"Best Buy is offering a sweet bundle on the WiFi-based iPad which includes your choice of a free companion AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint mobile hotspot."

Looks like you have your choice from Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, and of course you have to sign up for a monthly data plan and commit for two years. But if you were planning on picking up a Wi-Fi only iPad for someone, this is a pretty good bonus and gives you some flexibility versus the 3G version since you can use these hotspots for other devices. And since you no longer have to worry about the restocking fees Best Buy is infamous for, there is even less risk!

Best Buy Offers Deal on iPhone 3GS, Today Only

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:47 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/09/...ow-december-10/

"Only a few days after Radio Shack unveiled the first iPhone sale in recorded history, Best Buy's done one better -- it's offering up the 8GB iPhone 3GS "to qualified customers" without charging a cent for the handset."

Pretty good deal, even if you have to commit to two more years. Unless of course you are holding off waiting for that Verizon CDMA iPhone, but perhaps changing your mind is the intent.

Help Me Win $1250 for Kids Who Need It This Christmas

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Off Topic" @ 03:00 PM

Hi everyone! I need your help to win an unboxing contest that Best Buy is running on Facebook, and it’s for a good cause. Since I do a lot of those, I thought hey, why not enter? There are two grand prizes of $2500 CAD each, awarded as Best Buy gift cards. Since we’re coming up on Christmas, sharing the grand prize if I win makes sense – so I’ve publicly committed to donating half of the prize ($1250) to kids involved with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Canada. My mother works for that organization, and I’ve seen first hand the needs that some of these families have. She works with the in-school mentoring program, which pairs younger kids with senior citizen mentors. Apparently the kids are Nintendo Wii-crazy, and it’s an activity the seniors and kids can do together, so I think what I’ll do is buy as many Nintendo Wii bundles as I can with $1250 (it should be at least five of them).

I'd really appreciate the support of the Thoughts Media community, because - and I'll be blunt here - Twitter is such a noisy medium that every though yesterday the message about this contest went out to over 5000 people from three different people, nearly zero votes came as a result of it. I'm currently #3 in votes, but I could easily take a dominating lead if even 20% of you reading this decided to act. Please help!

Here’s how you can help me, and the kids, win – oh, and enter to win a $150 gift card yourself!

  1. Log into Facebook, and visit the Best Buy Unboxing Day Contest Site. Click Allow when the app asks for your permission. I’ve noticed there’s a weird bug with Internet Explorer 8 where it loops the process for almost a minute, so you may want to use Firefox or Chrome if you run into trouble.
  2. Find my Samsung Focus video (see above) and click on it, then click on Vote in the window that pops up. You’ll need to fill out a little form; if you live outside Canada and don't qualify for the gift card, just put in whatever bogus information you want.
  3. Return to that contest site every day to vote – you can vote once every day up until December 31st.

The winners will be announced January 3rd, 2011, and if I win, I’ll announce it here and provide details and photos of the Wii’s I purchase.

(And for the Windows Phone Thoughts readers, I'll be doing a "real" unboxing of the Focus - that was just a simplified, quick version. I've got some serious concerns about the screen...).

iPad Eating Up Laptop Sales Per Best Buy

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/26992/best-b...e+Intelligence)

"Best Buy CEO Brian Dun claims the iPad has cannibalized sales of PC laptops by as much as 50 per cent."

Dun made the remarks about the iPad during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, and I can see the validity of it. A co-worker has been eyeing my iPad over the last few months and said that his plan is to dump his Dell laptop and instead of buying another laptop he is going to buy an iPad. Perhaps two, one for him and one for his wife. With the updates in the new iOS coming out, it makes it even more appealing. I know there is a place for laptops but for those that are on the fence and don't need the power and options of a laptop, it seems the iPad is filling their needs. What are your thoughts?

Where Should You Pick Up Your iPhone 4?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/22/no-n...ntil-june-29th/

"Remember that guy who's supposedly been camped out for a week or so, in order to be first in line for an iPhone 4? Well, it's a damn good thing he's in front of an Apple Store and not AT&T."

Many reports about AT&T not having stock for walk up purchases until June 29th, but is that truly the case? There is also a report, via Cult of Mac, of a conversation with an AT&T employee who said they would have some available even if you didn't pre-order. Even Best Buy can't say for sure if they will have iPhones available without pre-order. The only sure thing about this is that if you want to buy an iPhone 4 and you didn't pre-order, make sure you are waiting in front of an Apple retail store.

Want to Translate a Minionator? Thanks to Best Buy, There is an App for That

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/14/t...ner=rss&emc=rss

"Best Buy is giving away a cellphone application intended to get audiences to use their phones during movies. The free app, Best Buy Movie Mode, is being released in connection with Universal Pictures for the July 9 release of "Despicable Me," an animated 3-D movie in which an aspiring supervillain named Gru inherits three little girls."

The little guys pictured above, from the movie Despicable Me, are called "Minionators,", basically henchmen for the "hero" of this animated film. They speak in gibberish so if you want to translate what they are saying, you pull out your iPhone and start the app from Best Buy to translate the gibberish into English. It also has tie-ins to Best Buy so it tells you were stores are located as well as where the movie is currently playing in your area. Lest you get upset that this will lead to a flurry of glowing iPhones that will interrupt your movie watching experience, the app is supposed to dim the screen and turn off the ringer, although it will allow normal phone functions to continue. This will only work when the film is displayed in "Movie Mode," so it won't be at every showing. I normally find glowing phones during movies a distraction and an annoyance, but since this is a kids movie, and there will be plenty of distractions throughout the movie anyway, I don't really have a problem with it. What are your thoughts?

Where Will You Go to Pre-Order Your iPhone 4 Tomorrow?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...e_tomorrow.html

"Best Buy announced Monday that it will be an authorized participant in Apple's iPhone 4 pre-launch on Tuesday, in which customers can visit one of its retail locations to reserve one of the new handsets for pickup the following week."

And not only Best Buy, but Radio Shack and of course AT&T and Apple will let you pre-order your iPhone 4 tomorrow. Wal-Mart isn't on the pre-order list however, but you have plenty of options regardless of where you live in the U.S. to order your iPhone. I'm still undecided, I have Best Buy, AT&T and an Apple Store all close to me. Where are you going to pre-order your iPhone 4?

Can't Find Insurance for Your iPhone 3G S? Best Buy Has Some

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._insurance.html

"Those who want added protection for their new iPhone 3G S units on launch day will have the option of queuing up at Best Buy to purchase both Apple's device as well as a rare accident insurance plan, albeit one which may cost almost as much as the phone itself."

At $15.00 USD per month, in one year you would spend $180.00 USD for this insurance. So unless you are a klutz and have a problem hanging onto your iPhone, it might not pencil out for you. The other problem is that you have to buy your iPhone 3G S at Best Buy in order to qualify for the service. But there aren't many options out there for insurance, at least that I have found. You may be able to get some coverage via our renters or homeowners insurance, so I think I would check that out before I spent any money on this plan.

Best Buy iPhone Inventory Dwindling

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...onstraints.html

"Best Buy over the weekend became the latest Apple partner to warn staffers of dwindling iPhone supply that could leave some of its stores without product to sell for a few weeks later this month. In a memo from its corporate division, the Richfield, Minnesota-based specialty electronics retailer told mobile sales employees that the iPhone 3G is now in constraint, noting that inventory of the touch-screen handsets will be light over the coming weeks and that some locations are likely to run out all together."

An Australian dealer "Brightpoint" is going through the same inventory problems, according to a memo they issued last week. Not a big shocker as WWDC '09 is getting closer and closer. As one site said, "Better hope you don't break your current iPhone 3G or you may not get a replacement!" I was just thinking I better be extra careful, now watch me drop it and break it now that I've jinxed myself.

Attention Best Buy Shoppers...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.appleiphoneapps.com/2009...tm_campaign=rss

"Accessing Best Buy's weekly deals via their website can be difficult on the iPhone and iPod touch. The pages are full of all kinds of unnecessary information when all you are searching for is a good deal. To assist their loyal customers in finding these great weekly deals, Best Buy created their first iPhone application to access this information while on-the-go."

This is an initial release, and it seems like it may have been a bit rushed since it is pretty limited. The price definitely a bargain (free), and they plan on having features added soon such as click-to-buy and product reviews. For now at least it gets you the weekly deals quickly, and when you are bargain hunting, isn't that all you really care about?
