Tips to Improve Your iOS Device Battery Life

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

"Good battery life is essential for a mobile device to succeed in the post-PC era, and Apple's iOS devices continue to pack upgraded internals and improved battery technology into every product iteration."

But even with all of this improvement, advances in what you can do with your iOS device do cause the drain game to happen. So if you are tired of seeing that red lined battery image as pictured above, then this article has some good tips for you. I knew about brightness levels and the effect on battery life, but there were several other tips I was unaware of, such as in location services. So check it out and learn how to master your battery!

To LTE or Not To LTE, That is the Question

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:14 PM

"A lot of Apple fans are sure that the next iPhone will support the true 4G LTE networks now being deployed by major cellular carriers."

Apple has said all along that they won't do an LTE iPhone as long as there are battery issues, and with the latest review from Engadget on the Galaxy Nexus, I think we will be waiting awhile. I won't buy a phone that has to have that much coddling when it comes to battery life. The speed of the phone isn't as important to me as not having to carry around an extra battery or two with me in order to use my phone all day. Or having to make sure I have a charger chord in my pocket. Until Apple solves the battery life issue that seems to be a problem currently with other phones, I doubt they will go that route. And if they did, I certainly wouldn't upgrade. What are your thoughts?

How is Your Battery Life With iOS 5?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 AM

http://osxdaily.com/2011/10/16/ios-...t=Google+Reader

"Many users who have upgraded to iOS 5 have noticed decreased battery life, the problem seems to effect iPhone and iPad users the worst, but some iPod touch users have noticed battery reductions as well"

I haven't noticed a problem with my iPhone 4 and battery life under iOS 5 that other folks have, but this article has some good tips nonetheless. I usually turn off Bluetooth as well as location services when I'm not going to be using them for awhile, but that's basically it. How about you? Any problems with iOS 5 and decreased battery life? What have you done to improve it?

Battery Recharging Myth-Busting: Don't Completely Drain Your LiIon Batteries

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Articles & Resources" @ 01:30 PM

http://lifehacker.com/#!5789794/avo...ps-battery-life

"Battery-centric web site Battery University explains the real relationship behind battery life and charging. Lithium-ion batteries-the batteries present in most modern smartphones and laptops-don't need to be fully discharged every once in a while to retain battery life, as many of us have been told. In fact, it's quite the opposite..."

Over the years, I'm sure we've all heard a lot of crazy battery advice: don't recharge your phone/laptop/MP3 player until it's completely dead; don't charge it too often; when you're not using it, take out the battery, etc. Much like telling someone they need to defrag their Wi-Fi connection, some of these "tips" just aren't true. This article gives you some important tips about how to maximize the battery life on your portable device.

Wondering Why the New Macbook Pro's Seem to Offer Less Battery Life?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Apple Laptops" @ 02:00 PM

http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/24/ma...o-battery-life/

"Now that the news about the new MacBook Pros is out there, one thing that may disappoint someone just reading the spec sheet is battery life. Across the board, the Pro is now rated at 7 hours. While still very solid, this is actually a step down from the previous versions which were rated at 8 to 9 hours for the 15 and 17-inch models, and 10 hours for the 13-inch model. So what gives?"

When I was looking at the battery life on the new Macbook Pros, I noticed something curious: they're all listed as "up to 7 hours". I couldn't recall what the exact battery life specs were for the previous Macbook Pros, but I knew it varied from model to model. As the above text shows, Apple had quoted the battery life on previous Macbooks from 8 to 10 hours. Sandy Bridge processors are supposed to be even more power-friendly than the first-gen Core series processors. So what gives? Read more...

iOS 4 - Battery Vampire?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

"I upgraded my factory-unlocked iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 just prior to leaving on a six-day trip to British Columbia. My service provider in the US is T-Mobile, and I expected to use Rogers without a problem in Canada. Well, I was in for a rude surprise ..."

Having no data plan with Rogers while in Vancouver, I was prepared to use wi-fi whenever possible, with the expectation that it (wi-fi) would impact battery life no more than it did on v3.1.3. Was I wrong! Using about ten minutes of wi-fi dropped the battery to about 90%, and that was just emailing. Another five minutes of light browsing dropped it another five percent. Something just felt different (wrong) about iOS 4. Read more...
