iPads in the Airport

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 AM

"This might be the most exciting thing to happen to airports after charging stations and XpresSpa. Very soon three major North American airports are going to have select terminals decked out with about 2,500 iPads available for anyone's use."

I had a chance to use the ones they have set up at JFK about month ago, and it is a pretty nice set up to provide information to travelers. It also had charging station for your various gadgets.

TSA and the MacBook Air

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/28/...rough-security/

"Really, TSA? Are you honestly so stoked to disappoint? If you'll recall, the American Transportation Security Administration got up close and personal with a first-generation MacBook Air after wrongly assuming it was an Apocalypse-bringer, and even after adjusting rules so that iPads, netbooks and other smaller electronics could fly through carry-on screening equipment without being unpacked, we've still heard of (and personally experienced) occasions where agents have demanded that tablet PCs be ran through naked."

Inconsistency is the one constant with TSA and their rules. I dealt with them several times last year when my daughter was going to pole vaulting competitions. All we wanted to know was how to pack her track spikes or if we could just carry them on board since they were pretty expensive and we didn't want them to get lost. Trying to figure out which of the 4 answers we were given on how to pack her track spikes was the correct answer was the challenge. So I take this stuff with a grain of salt because depending on which TSA agent is at the screening stations, you just might be forced to take it out. Yes, they can say it's ok but be prepared to take it out anyway. And DO NOT argue with them about it, it gets you nowhere but one of those rooms with no windows. Oh, regarding the spikes, we took them off the shoes and put them in a ziplock bag and put them in the carry on bag and no problem.

Stuck in the Airport? Have Some Free Skype

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2010/04...e-airport-pain/

"Airports are wonderful places, aren't they? Everyone is friendly, the seats are comfortable, the prices reasonable, and the food delicious. I love hanging around airports. I relish the time between connecting flights, and I have been known to pack my bags and drive to the nearest international airport just to hang out and pretend I'm waiting for a flight."

Obviously he is delusional, but if you find yourself stuck in the airport over the next two days, Skype wants to make it a little easier on you by offering free service at any of sites, which number over 100,000. This ends at 23:59GMT on Friday April 23rd, 2010. If you are stuck, check it out at Skype.

TSA Says iPad is Checkpoint Friendly

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

"Apple's iPad tablet is friendlier than a traditional laptop when it comes to airport security."

TSA said yesterday that you shouldn't need to remove your iPad from your bag, but if they can't get a clear image, just like anything else, you may be asked to remove it. At least they are ahead of the game on this one, but I sure hope they at least know what it is, unlike when the MacBook Air came through one of their checkpoints.

AT&T Hooks Up Tulsa

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Articles & Resources" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?p...articleid=30368

"Travelers who will be making their way through the Tulsa International Airport will now have the added convenience of having access to AT&T's wireless Internet service at their fingertips. AT&T - an industry leader in Wi-Fi with the nation's largest Wi-Fi network - and the Tulsa International Airport today announced that AT&T Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport."

If you are traveling through Tulsa International it is good news indeed. If you aren't an AT&T customer, the charge is $7.99 USD per 24-hour period. Hopefully none of you will be stuck in the Tulsa airport but if you are, and you are an AT&T customer, at least you can surf the net and save your money for snacks, or adult beverages if you prefer.

Apple Updates for MacBook and Airport

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/apple-upda...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"If you're set to automatically grab new updates, you're likely to notice Apple's Software Update burbling insistently in your dock for your attention, after Apple released a couple of updates of both their Airport software and the MacBook / MacBook Pro's EFI."

The Airport Update 2009-002 fixes a problem that involved the inability to turn the Airport on or off after upgrading from Leopard. There were also some network connectivity problems that it addressed. The MacBook EFI Update fixes the horrendous sound the SuperDrive was making on some machines. Both available as automatic updates or via the Apple Support Page

Update Smorgasbord!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-1...subj=News-Apple

"It was a busy Tuesday for Apple's software team. The company released updates for its Safari Web browser, its wireless AirPort client, and the Multi-Touch trackpad for users who have Windows installed on their Mac."

On the same day as the Safari update, Tuesday to be exact, Apple also released a few more updates. One was for the Airport client in models of the MacBook and MacBook Pro line, which is aimed at Airport problems while running on battery power. Another update was for users of Bootcamp, which will improve the Multi-Touch Trackpad performance when running Windows XP or Vista. And yesterday there were several updates for Tiger (Intel, PPC, Server Universal and Server PPC) as well as one for Leopard. Whew! Busy week for updates!

Unibody MacBook Owners Having WiFi Drama?

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Laptops" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...y_wireless.html

"Some owners of Apple's new unibody, 15-inch MacBook Pro are reporting in Apple's support forums (1, 2) that their connections to wireless access points often lose signal strength or drop their links altogether. The problem echoes a similar one witnessed by owners of aluminum iMac owners since mid-year that has created similar difficulties. What conditions are exactly necessary to trigger the problem are unknown. Connections to some access points work properly, while others create severe connection problems. Network and security settings don't appear to matter, nor do devices attached to the systems. A collection of the MacBook Pro owners have partly diagnosed the problem and have discovered that the latency between their Macs and their Wi-Fi hotspots can fluctuate wildly, shifting from normal response times of under 10ms to as high as 39,290ms -- or more than 39 seconds between signals. These extreme variances result in the data packet loss that ultimately interrupts the signal."

As I said in the comments on my review of my MacBook Pro, I haven't had this issue, but apparently a lot of people are. It's long been hinted by disgruntled users that the aluminum case is equivalent to a Faraday cage, from which no radio signal can escape in tact. I have no reason to believe it isn't happening, I just haven't experienced it yet. It's definitely something to be aware of when you're choosing your next Apple product, especially considering that all of them seem to be moving toward aluminum as the material of choice. Then again, there is the MacBook White...
