Apple TV updated to iOS 4.3

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 08:43 PM

http://thenextweb.com/apple/2011/08...ous+(TNW+Apple)

"Apple has today released an update to its Apple TV 2G that brings with it the ability to stream all TV content already purchased through iTunes from iCloud, as well as support for the popular video sharing site Vimeo. The update brings the software version of the Apple TV 2G to iOS 4.3."

Being able to stream TV that you purchased via iTunes wasn't happening until this update, so now not only can you do it for those episodes you rent, but the ones you decide to purchase. And you can make purchases via the Apple TV. And now Vimeo support is there for steaming. I just wish Hulu would get added.

Like Feature for iTunes Enabled for iPad with iOS 4.3

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"In addition to a few big features, yesterday's release of iOS 4.3 brought several nice-to-haves such as password reentry for in-app purchases and the ability to comment on songs or like them directly in iPad's built-in iPod application (no, not "like" as in "Facebook like")."

I don't use this too often since I don't have any iTunes friends (don't be sad for me, I'll activate it soon enough just to test it out and then I can find some Ping friends I'm sure!). But if you use the feature then it is nice you can also access it via your iPad. You have to register with the Ping service and this only works on music purchased via iTunes. Do you use Ping? What are your thoughts?

AT&T Restricting Hotspot to Three Devices? Or Are They...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/04/...hree-wifi-devi/

"Say it ain't so! According to this here slide, which details a bit of insidery AT&T information about the impending release of iOS 4.3, Ma Bell's iPhone 4 will have its Personal Hotspot restricted to use with just three devices."

I don't know that it is that big of a deal, I normally would only have one or two devices sharing my hotspot anyway. And it turns out based on documentation with iOS 4.3 it's actually the software that limits you to 3 devices and not AT&T. If you want to have 5 devices, you have to use Bluetooth or USB to add the other two. This was found on the Apple site about iOS 4.3: "You can share your connection with up to five devices at once over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB - with up to three of those connections using Wi-Fi."

iOS 4.3

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:30 AM

"In addition to the iPad 2, Apple on Wednesday took some time to take the wraps off the long awaited iOS 4.3 update."

Big news for me was the personal hotspot option that AT&T says they will allow on devices on their network. This may convince me to give up my unlimited plan for the convenience, and can then I can get rid of my Verizon MiFi. But that's not all there is to 4.3, as they are also updating mobile Safari with performance enhancements from the Nitro JavaScript engine that OS X uses. And with updates to AirPlay, you can now stream video from the device to your HDTV. In addition, they have added iTunes Home Sharing that allows you to stream media from your iTunes library straight to your mobile device. Lots of functionality added to this update, so which feature or features do you think you will get the most use from?

iOS 4.3 Has Some Surprises

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:52 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...h_gestures.html

"Apple on Wednesday released the first beta of iOS 4.3 for the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, bringing support for Personal Hotspot, new multi-touch gestures, the ability for third-party applications to use AirPlay, and a software option for changing the functionality of the iPad hardware switch."

Within this version of iOS 4.3, they are including some new gestures for iPad involving 4 and 5 finger gestures, which sounds odd to me, but I guess I should reserve judgement until the final product is out. What it also apparently does though, is bring back the orientation lock, as it gives you the option to set it up as either a mute switch or orientation lock in the settings. So glad they are giving us this option back. There are some other additions, notably the ability to create a personal "hotspot" just like the Verizon iPhone will do, so apparently this isn't carrier specific. Some good additions to this version of the iOS I think, but the bad news is it appears that the 3G owners are left out in the cold as it appears it is only compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, third- and fourth-gen iPod touches, and iPads.

Apple Mail 4.3 Reviewed

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/reviews/pro...ew/mail_43.html

"The latest iteration of Apple's Mail client, like the OS it accompanies, seems little changed on the surface. Its greatest improvements lie under the hood, and while not all of them entirely live up to Apple's promises, the program on the whole remains dependably excellent."

The biggest change is the built-in support for Microsoft Exchange 2007, which makes it easier to work from home if you need that kind of access. And if your business has the autoconnect feature installed on its server, you can set it up using only your email and password. There are also some other features such as faster response times and a drag-and-drop feature for organizing your sidebar. Some minor stuff but good to see they are still working on it; it's simple but I like it.
