http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...=rss_everything

"Microsoft released updates for Office 2008 and Office 2011 for the Mac on Wednesday. The updates addressed issues with each suite's email application, and the Office 2011 update also disabled the ability to import messages from Lion's Mail app into Outlook because the feature isn't working as expected."

The Office 2008 update is numbered 12.31.1, while the Office 2011 update is numbered 14.1.3, both available now. No word yet on when a fix for the import feature from Mail will be released.

This is one festival that sounds like a great time, and you can find out more about it at the Roundhouse site, or just go to iTunes. If you think you might want to go, you need to get the iTunes Festival app so you can win some tickets, which are free and distributed via lottery.

iOSDev Camp Coming in July

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/iosdev-cam...next-killer-app

"Got an idea for a killer app? Consider huddling up for a weekend hackathon with designers and developers at iOSDev Camp 2011."

You can find out more about this camp at their website, but the basics are that it is being hosted by PayPal at their San Jose offices from July 15 to 17 2011. You can get access for $50.00 USD for the weekend event, which includes food so it isn't too bad of a deal if you are interested in developing for iOS. And the best apps will vie for several prizes at the end of the camp. If you are in the area and have been interested in, or are currently developing for, iOS, this might be the place to be in July. Besides, the weather is bound to be beautiful in California then right?

What Do You Think Will Happen at WWDC?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:51 PM

http://gizmodo.com/5808251/wwdc-11-...d-but-what-else

"Apple made the bold move of pre-announcing its WWDC offerings this week, perhaps to curb anticipation over the lack of hardware, or maybe to ensure they bowl everyone over with an unexpected move."

This coming Monday will be WWDC and Steve Jobs will take the stage. Since this is an Apple event, of course the predictions are running rampant, with sites like Gizmodo and Cult of Mac posting their prediction lists, while other sites such as The Mac Observer posting editorials saying "brace yourself" for some big changes. I personally think it's a no brainer that iCloud will be discussed, and iOS 5 and Lion most certainly. But what about hardware? This one has me stumped as now there is talk about a revamp for Time Capsule. What are your thoughts on what might happen on Monday?

Verizon Releases Q1 Earnings...2.2 Million iPhones Sold

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/21/veri...nes-in-q1-2011/

"This morning Verizon released its quarterly earnings for Q1 2011."

That is quite the number, 2.2 million iPhones sold in Q1 of 2011 for Verizon in only six weeks. This comes in under the 3.2 million iPhones that AT&T reports selling in Q1 but still impressive. The total number sold by AT&T and Verizon come in at 5.8 million, which is about 30% of the total Apple sold in the quarter. I'm thinking this number would have been higher for Verizon had this been the iPhone 5, but then again, that is due out later this year so it will be interesting to see what the numbers are then won't it?

Impressive Results from Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 08:41 AM

http://tidbits.com/article/12124?rss

"Apple's results for the just-completed financial quarter, Q2-2011, are predictably impressive."

Impressive indeed, earning a net profit of $5.99 billion on revenues of $24.67 billion. This is a record for their second quarter earnings. Some of the highlights:

  • Macs - 3.76 million sold, up 28% over last year;
  • iPhone - 18.65 million sold internationally, up 113% over last year, with an increase of 155% in the US;
  • iPad - This included the iPad 2, although only the last three weeks of the quarter, but had sales of 4.7 million in 59 countries. The figures were total without breaking apart the original from the iPad 2 however;
  • iTunes Store - The online store brought in $1.6 billion, which made it the best quarter ever. The store carries over 350,000 apps and has paid out over $2 billion to the iOS developers. The iBookstore added 17,000 titles during the quarter and has recorded over 100 million downloads;
  • Apple Retail Stores - In May (the 19th to be exact) it will be ten years since the first store opened, and in this quarter the stores served 71.7 million visitors with an average of $9.39 billion revenue per store.

There is more to the report and you can read it in its entirety here at Apple.

Apple Financial, Yea, They are in Pretty Good Shape I'd Say

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:25 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/appl...slideshow-start

"Listening to Apple's quarterly conference calls these days is like watching a once-in-a-generation sports team demolish every other team in the league."

With growth from same time last year of 70% (yes, 70%) I'd say they did demolish everyone else. That is a pretty incredible number by anyone's standard. So impressive were most of their figures that they called the 23% growth in Mac sales "disappointing." Yea, it's only 8 times the growth of the PC market. Another figure I found interesting was that the retail division is a $16 billion dollar a year revenue source for Apple, and revenues from same time last year jumped 95%. The story we linked to has several other interesting tidbits from yesterdays financial call, and the stock market has taken notice since in early trading Apple Shares are at an all time high of $348.60 USD, gaining $7.95 USD, a new intraday high. You can see a transcript of the conference call here, or check it out at the Apple Investor site and hear the details yourself.

Popularity Has a Price

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:04 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/156...ss_products_mac

"McAfee has compiled the wisdom and insight of its security researchers and produced the 2011 Threat Predictions Report. The report contains a variety of forecasts, prophecies, and educated guesses on what to expect for computer and information security next year, but one of the most notable is that Apple has achieved some level of critical mass that makes it a prime target."

It's always been implied Macs were safer than a Windows machine since malware usually went after the more popular machines, but it appears those days may be coming to an end. Of course you have always had to be vigilant against the schemes out there on the Internet, such as the bank phishing frauds, but as far as "attacks" go, the Windows machines were usually the target. Now, according to McAfee, the trend will be changing in 2011 to include Apple in the mix of targets. To be honest, the impression that Apple is immune to attacks is the biggest weakness of the system, as that tends to make people less vigilant. So this is a good warning to be extra careful. Since we are on the topic, what are your thoughts about virus protection on a Mac, do you use one? If so, which one?

iLife '11, Well Worth the Upgrade

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/ilife-11-g...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Despite a massive lion lurking in the background of the press invite for today's event, the big news didn't have much to do with OS X 10.7 (now officially "Lion"); instead, the big news was about the new MacBook Air pair, the Mac App Store, FaceTime for Mac - and iLife '11"

With the updates to iLife, namely iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie, this just became one of the greatest values out there. $49.00 USD for this package is a steal with all it does now. Even if they only updated iMovie it would have been worth it. And best of all, if you purchased a Mac with iLife on or after October 1st this year, you can upgrade for a measily $7.00 USD. Nice.

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:39 AM

http://www.laptopmag.com/software/m...r-mac-2011.aspx

"Although some Mac owners will opt for Apple's own iWork suite when it comes time to getting work done, many others will take comfort in Microsoft Office for Mac, particularly if Office was the first productivity suite they learned to use, or if it's the one they use every day on their work computer."

And starting October 26th, you can have your choice since Office for Mac 2011 will finally be released. Microsoft has a page all set up [link] outlining the features of this updated program, but one feature I like already is the price. $99.00 USD for the Student Version and a mere $119.00 USD for the Home Edition [affiliate link]. That being said, if you want Outlook with your office suite, you will have to go with the Business version that will set you back $199.00, so not too happy about that. Of course there are other choices out there, but check out the review before you make your decision, you might decide it is worth the price.

Screenshots of Office 2011 for Mac

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...of_buttons.html

"Screenshots of Microsoft's 2011 version of its productivity suite for Mac have appeared, highlighting a more serious user interface appearance and the Vista Ribbon."

Not sure which one I like better, but the Microsoft Office Ribbon sure is busy. Even though they are now using Cocoa framework, it still looks very much like a Microsoft product. Anyone out there going to be using this when it comes out?

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, Details From Macworld

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._interface.html

"Microsoft on Thursday detailed some of the new features in its forthcoming Office for Mac 2011 suite, including co-authoring tools, Web apps, and a redesigned ribbon interface more consistent with its Windows counterpart."

According to Eric Wilfrid, MacBU General Manager at Microsoft, "Together with your team -- officemates, family or classmates -- you are part of the community that helps shape each version of Office for Mac. You’ve told us that working together across platforms is a priority to you and that’s why we are making Office for Mac 2011 the best, most compatible productivity suite on the Mac." No pricing set yet, but some of the specifics are co-authoring tools that allow multiple users to work on files from different locations with real-time updates, access to Microsoft Web Apps from within the program so you can share documents from any machine with an Internet connection and allowing Outlook to import .PST files from Outlook for Windows.
